It’s December. The Christmas countdown is so on, and our latest arrival knows it… Our Just Landed series continues and just call us Santa because we’re bringing you ❄️ Tromso ❄️ This Arctic Circle city is a prime pick to catch the Northern Lights, spot orcas and humpback whales and satisfy your sauna obsession. Time to put that new winter coat you asked for for Christmas to good use…
So, get the tea on Tromso and, ofc, our top picks for where to stay, too…
Tromso, Norway
It’s only the northernmost city in the whole entire world! Winter season in Norway is the best time to see the Northern Lights and in November and December, whales feast in the fjord waters. You’ve got to visit Pust – AKA ‘breathe’ in Norwegian – where you can hop between the sauna and cold plunge pools like the locals. Ride the Fjellheisen to ‘the most beautiful view in Tromso’, admire the Arctic Cathedral and learn about Sami culture.
Another thing… the sun never sets in summer above the Arctic Circle. 24 hours of pure sunshine? Yes, please. ‘Midnight sun season’ lasts from late May until early July and the locals deffo make the most of it. You can still get snow in June to make those bluebird days glisten, and if you’re wild swimming obsessed, Telegrafbukta is where it’s at. There are so many hours in the day to squeeze in everything you want to do – kayaking, boat tours, hiking.
Our top hotel picks
Clarion Hotel The Edge
This hotel is super central, with easy access to public transport, restaurants and shopping – and the bus terminal over the road is where a lot of day tours depart from. The rooms have great views of Tromso and the port, there’s a yummy breakfast spread, and the design of the whole place is giving cosy.
Moxy Tromso
Stay at this hotel for the views. It’s a bit closer to the airport, and you’re still only a 15-minute bus into the city centre – there’s a bus stop right over the road. From the Sky Bar on the top floor, you can look out over the water and snow-topped mountains with a drink. Floor-to-ceiling glass windows let you make the most of the views, and the style is very modern and Norwegian.
Scandic Ishavshotel
You’re right on the quayside at this hotel, only 50 metres from the Hurtigruten ferry AKA the Norwegian Coastal Express. Go for a superior room with a private balcony and make the most of being by the water. There’s also a restaurant and a bar, and most of the tours in Tromso start around here, so daytripping is too easy.
