Just Landed – August’s new arrivals

If anyone thought we’d been a bit quiet in the new destination department, this one’s for you… Just Landed is back and bigger than ever this month, with two top-tier new arrivals – it’s LA baby and historic Strasbourg. But, with our picks in the USA and France expanding, that means more hotels, too. We’ve pulled out some of the most exciting stays to shout about and some more info on each place below.

So, meet the top picks from August’s new arrivals…

Los Angeles, USA

We’ve only gone and landed the City of Angels… The Hollywood sign, the Walk of Fame, Venice Beach – this absolute icon of America is where movie stars go to make things happen. The lifestyle here is all about hiking in the hills, heading to Malibu for a surf, and shopping in the many, many boutiques along the boulevards.

Pure five-star luxury

This is what chic really looks like. SLS Beverly Hills is a five-star Luxury Collection Hotel in Beverly Grove, where you’ll be just a five-minute drive from Rodeo Drive and Hollywood Boulevard. It’s in the heart of the city and knows it. The décor is something out of a Hollywood film and the pool terrace is very LA – glam cabanas, white sunbeds and gold features. There’s a 24-hour fitness centre for when you’re not hiking in the hills, two restaurants and even a complimentary shuttle to take you where you need to go within two miles of the hotel.

Seriously sporty

Stays at Kimpton Shorebreak Resort are built different. Some room’s balconies look right over to Huntington Beach and its pier. You can check the waves before you even leave – this spot’s great for a surf, as well as sunning yourself on the sand. It’s like staying at your mates’ beach house… if they were rich and had a four-star rating. You can hire bikes here to explore the coast and play beach volleyball. But the main star is the 40-inch-wide climbing wall. Plus, the gym is decked out with Peloton bikes, so fitness and wellbeing are a focus here. Dine at Pacific Hideaway for coastal-themed cuisine and craft cocktails, or head out along the beachfront.

Rooftop pool vibes

You can’t get much more central than Courtyard Los Angeles L.A. Live. The rooftop here is where it’s at, with a pool lined with loungers, daybeds and palm trees – it’s the perfect escape above the busy city. There’s also a raised terrace area further up, with comfy seats to take in the sunset over the skyline. Inside, you’ve got an indoor pool, gym and spa, and a restaurant and bar. There’s a poolside bar, too, so you can stay in for cocktails or head out on the town – the Crypto.com arena is just a five-minute walk away if you fancy a Lakers’ game or are over here for a gig.

Strasbourg, France

France’s Strasbourg is something out of a storybook. Its historic, cobbled streets come alive with festive markets at Christmas, or spring and summer are perfect for sailing down the river to see the city’s half-timbered houses. At night, a student crowd means there are clubbing options, as well as cosy wine bars.

Quirky design

The décor at Beaucour is definitely giving French fairytale. Exposed wooden beams, fireplaces and colourful furniture create a warm and cosy feel. It’s set across five half-timber houses that date back to the 18th century and each room has its own personal style. In seven minutes, you can walk to the Cathédrale, and the main train station and European Parliament are a few kilometres away. You can get room service here and book a massage, but mainly it’s a super welcoming place to crash after a day exploring the city of Strasbourg.

Sunny terrace scenes

Sofitel Strasbourg Grande Ile has a touch of French elegance about it in a super central spot. The lobby is all royal purple, marble statues and grand pillars. The place is five stars, so that sounds about right. Rooms with balconies mean you can peer across the city’s historic buildings and leafy streets. The pretty Église Saint-Pierre-le-Jeune church is just next door, which makes for a great view. Plus, there’s a big terrace downstairs to soak up the sun in summer. Even the gym comes with its own outdoor space and loungers to flop after your workout. There’s a restaurant and bar, where you can eat in or out, too. Or, stroll down to the river in a matter of minutes to try somewhere local.

Apartment life

Citadines Eurometropole Strasbourg has more of a modern feel about it. It’s in the city’s business district, just a 10-minute drive from the Rhine Palace and Synagogue of Peace. It’s an aparthotel, so you get your own space, including a kitchen, as well as the full concierge service. You can treat yourself to massages, body treatments and facials at the spa. The indoor pool is also super stylish, with a mural ceiling, plants and a waterfall feature. The hotel also has a bike rental service, so when you head out to explore the city, you can travel further on two wheels. The restaurant puts on show cooking if you fancy eating out but also kind of in – in the same building at least – but the beauty of your own apartment is cooking for yourself if you fancy it. It’s a pretty glamourous home from home.
