Everyone remembers their fave family holiday. Digging holes on the beach, showing off your handstands in the pool, pretending your mocktail was the real thing… Core memories for life. Plus, it’s a chance to press pause on your daily grind and spend some proper quality time together with the kids. Toddlers, teenagers or twins – we’ve got Family holidays for every size and set-up.

For most families, All Inclusive holidays are the ultimate hack. Kids are notoriously bad at getting a round in or splitting the bill after a meal out, so paying one price for all your food and drink is a major win for sticking to a budget. Breakfast, lunch and dinner are buffet-style as standard – a win for fussy eaters – and everyone can help themselves to snacks and soft drinks without you getting your card out.

Another huge bonus about All Inclusive is that, usually, some activities and entertainment are included, too – we’re talking sports, games and hotel-run kids’ clubs, plus family-friendly shows and discos in the evenings. You get to sit back, sip on your piña colada, and relax because your past self has already sorted the spending. Go you.

If you’re a family of outdoorsy types, destinations like Switzerland, Iceland and Canada meet the brief for unreal natural beauty and a high chance of spotting some wildlife. The Caribbean, Mexico and Costa Rica all get a mention for their Jungle Book scenes and epic zip-lining opportunities, and the kids can have their little explorer moment in Thailand, India or Sri Lanka. Their geography school trip could never…

For the Horrible Histories-obsessed kids, City Breaks will bring it all to life. Rome and Athens cover the ancient history lessons, pick Paris for a recap of the French Revolution, and cities like Berlin, Krakow, Prague and Budapest are full of World War Two and Cold War sites. Museums and art galleries often have fun and interactive areas especially for children, and guided tours will give them all the extra tea which’ll send them to the top of their class.

Going big? Go Luxury. Treat the fam to a five-star stay in Turkey, Cyprus or Greece, or get some winter sun without going too far from home in the Canaries, Tunisia or Cape Verde. Wherever you pick, you’ll be treated like VIPs – expect top-tier facilities like waterparks, swim-up bars, private beaches and boujie à la carte restaurants. Extra child-friendly features like football, art and dance academies are ideal for making friends and learning new skills – and gives you a chance to check out that dreamy adults-only spa…

Everyone knows school holidays aren’t the cheapest time to get away, but there are definitely ways you can keep the cost down of your family trip. We’ve got a long line-up of holidays with a free child place for every two full-paying adults – just use our free child place finder to see how it works and where they’re available. Otherwise, locking it in well in advance means you can make the most of early booking offers, or snap up a last-minute deal if you’re feeling spontaneous. Self Catering can be super affordable and is a great option if you need accommodation with more space, like an apartment or a villa – plus you’ll get to stick to your mealtime routine. To swerve the crowds and save on peak prices, opt for a destination that’s not in its prime touristy period yet. Places like the Caribbean, Thailand and Mexico are much cheaper during their rainy seasons, and any showers quickly clear to blue skies and tropical temps.

Our guide to family holidays

Lots of family-friendly stays have baby equipment like cots, highchairs and bottle warmers available to hire for free or for a bit extra, so you don’t have to stress about getting it all on your flight. Look out for hotels with dedicated toddler pools, splash parks, soft play zones and lots of shady areas for a comfy afternoon siesta. Plus, plenty of spots have nap-friendly spaces, babysitting services and kids’ buffets. Check out our deals for family holidays with babies and toddlers.

Pick a short-haul holiday so you can spend the least amount of time on a plane as possible – places like mainland Spain, Portugal and Croatia are all family-friendly destinations under three hours away. Pack their fave snacks, toys, spare clothes and anything else you’ll need to keep them entertained while waiting in the airports or during the flight. Lots of airlines offer family boarding and priority services, so take advantage of these to make your journey easier. And, go for a hotel where you can hire baby equipment to reduce the amount of stuff you need to bring

Short flight times, beaches with gentle waves and peaceful vibes are all things to look for when you’re planning your trip. Menorca in the Balearics and the Algarve in Portugal are perfect for their calm waters, laidback energy and family-friendly resorts. If you’re happy to go on a slightly longer flight, Dubai’s beaches are ideal for families, and the hotels in The Palm Jumeirah area have access to all the child-friendly attractions away from the buzzy city centre.

For families with older kids and teens, action-packed destinations with lots going on are the way to go. Costa Rica is pure adventure material – think zip-lining through rainforests, white-water rafting and snorkelling in cliché-clear waters. Closer to home, Lake Garda is the place to go for mountain biking, rock climbing and watersports, and Croatia’s Dalmatian Coast deserves a name-drop for kayaking and hiking around the islands.

Teenagers need space to do their own thing – even on holiday – so family-friendly hotels with teen clubs are a great solution. Look out for places with games lounges, social hangouts and organised group activities, like beach volleyball, football and watersports lessons. Some of the more luxe stays feature film nights, live DJs and pool parties where they can chill out with other kids their age under supervision, so you don’t have to have eyes on them at all times and ruin their rep.

Who said learning couldn’t be fun? Holidays can be super informative for kids – geography, history, world religions, culture… they’re basically the best school trip ever. City breaks are all about embracing new cultures – they’ll love Amsterdam’s museums and quirky galleries, or take them to Mexico City to see Tenochtitlan, AKA the OG Aztec capital. If they prefer geography over history, Iceland’s geysers, waterfalls and geothermal pools will blow their minds, and so will seeing the real-life Pompeii and Mount Vesuvius on a trip to Naples. For animal lovers, nothing can top going on a safari in Senegal or the Gambia.

Seek out a stay with good-sized family rooms, and if you’ve got older kids, interconnecting ones give everyone a bit more space and privacy. Resorts with babysitting services or evening childcare give you some downtime while the kids are having fun, which means you can get that massage you’ve been thinking about or enjoy the adults-only area. Look for hotels that have facilities like kids’ pools and splash parks, activity and entertainment programmes, plus child-friendly dining options like buffets and snack bars.

All Inclusive resorts cover all your meals, drinks and some activities, so they’re super handy for budgeting and having everything taken care of for you. But, Self Catering is a more flexible option, as you can cook your own meals whenever you like and stick to a routine with your kids. They can also be a great way to keep the cost down – just find your closest supermarket and stock up on the essentials, and you can always swap a meal in for a lunch or dinner out if you fancy switching it up. Plus, Self Catering stays normally offer an apartment or an entire villa, so you’ll have more space, privacy and independence.

Hotel groups like Holiday Villages and SplashWorld are all about family fun. They’re designed especially for families, offering incredible kids’ programmes, activities and entertainment, as well as childcare services. Holiday Villages encourage your kids to get involved in football or dance academies, high-ropes courses or arts-and-crafts workshops, and SplashWorld hotels are a win for water babies – they all come with free access to a waterpark.

Everyone loves slides and rides… In Europe, Spain’s Costa Dorada is home to PortAventura, a huge theme park with a waterpark and rides the whole family will love. Tenerife has the iconic Siam Park, one of the world’s top-rated waterparks – it’s Thai-themed, so expect cool details like dragons and temples. Then, Dubai’s also got loads of amazing attractions, like Atlantis Aquaventure, LEGOLAND® and IMG Worlds of Adventure.

Beach days on your family holiday are the perfect way to unwind after a daytrip or a busy morning sightseeing. In general, look out for beaches where you can hire sunloungers and parasols or have natural shade, and nearby cafes and shops are handy, too. The water at Menorca’s Cala Galdana is calm, and it has a playground right there. The Algarve’s Praia da Rocha is another popular pick – the sand is seriously soft, there are lifeguards on stand-by, plus shops, bars and restaurants all along the beachfront. In Zante, Navagio – or Shipwreck Beach – is a fun spot for a bit more adventure. The spot itself is stunning and family friendly, but the beached rusty boat is very cool and makes it one the most papped places in Greece. Take a boat trip here, check out the smuggler’s shipwreck and go for a swim.

Lots of stays like Holiday Villages, Hard Rock and Planet Hollywood hotels have top-tier kids’ clubs with groups for different ages, from arts and crafts and music sessions for little ones to games and sports for older kids. If your child has a specific interest or hobby, they can often join workshops or academies like football, dance or theatre, where they can learn new skills and make friends. And in the evenings, you can expect things like mini-discos, talent shows, film nights and teen parties.

There’s nothing cooler than the bright lights and big city energy when you’re small, so an urban break will blow their little minds. Bring their history lessons to life in cities like Rome, Athens or Marrakech, or introduce them to new cultures, iconic landmarks and brand-new flavours in cities like New York, Dubai or Bangkok.

She’s here to get your kids away from their screens and out in the fresh air. Enter your Sound of Music era and set off for a family hiking holiday in the Swiss or Austrian Alps, or fly across the pond for mega mountain scenes in Canada. If you’ve got a mini David Attenborough, a safari in Senegal will deffo be the best trip of their life (so far…)

It’s never too early to find yourself, so take your teeny travel lover to a bucket-list destination like Sri Lanka, Goa or Thailand. We’re talking jungle treks, night markets and Buddhist temples – everyone does a gap year when they’re 18, and they’ve already done one at 18 months…

School’s out, holidays are so on… Make the most of the breaks with one of these trips.

Family holiday FAQs

Look for destinations that are in their low season during the school holidays and book your trip in advance to catch an early-booking deal. Go All Inclusive to save spending money on meals, drinks and activities out or go Self Catering and cook your own food at your apartment. If you’re going on a daytrip, pop to the supermarket to grab some snacks and drinks to avoid paying a premium at the actual attraction.

Stay in a family-friendly resort with lots of activities and facilities for little kids. Pick a place where you can hire baby equipment, so you don’t have to travel with it all, and you’ll save room for more essentials like nappies, wipes and favourite toys. Find flights that are around the time your little ones usually go down for a nap or early in the morning. And, to keep the flight time down, stay close to home with a holiday to Europe – lots of destinations, like the Canary Islands still get year-round sun and are under a five-hour flight away.

Activities like books, games and colouring materials are handy when you’re waiting in the airport or for your transfers. Make the most of family-friendly activities and entertainment programmes in your resort, as well as kids’ pools and splash parks, too.

Create a packing list with items to put in each bag, so that way you know exactly where something is if you need it, like nappies or a change of clothes. Lots of destinations are hot in the day but can cool down a fair bit in the evening, so it’s important to pack an extra layer for when you’re sitting outside once the sun’s set. Kids’ clothes don’t take up too much space, so you could share a suitcase to keep your luggage weight down. Don’t forget essentials like medication, toiletries, chargers and other bits for your little one – and make sure you pack them somewhere you can easily get to them
