You take on mountains for fun

Fly-and-flop? We don’t know her…

Yeah, we might all have moaned our way up a big hill when we were younger with our parents, but that’s all part of the journey… Now, we take on mountains for fun. If you’re not moving, you’re not seeing where you are. On ya bike, on foot or in a kayak. Up a hill, round a lake, along the beach – you name it, you wanna do it. Think resorts with tennis courts, a waterpark nearby or a championship golf course just down the road. If you’re going beachy, it’s not just for sunbathing… You want surf, jet skis, scuba diving and snorkelling scenes.

Plus, when you think about it, hiking is free! The views are a win but it’s also about the snacks along the way – baguette strapped to your backpack anyone? – games like 21 questions and would you rather, and someone’s poor sense of direction inevitably leading you the wrong way. But it’s okay because you can laugh about it now and those core memories are forever.

So, what can’t you do? It’s time to pick your next active adventure…

Best destinations for Activity holidays

These places are loved by outdoorsy types, and you can browse some deals to go with them.

PICK FOR CYCLING

Majorca is super popular with bikepackers, with around 300 days of sunshine a year to make the most of. The mountain roads in the Serra de Tramuntana area don’t have much traffic and are super scenic for peaceful rides – the Cap of Formentor is one of the most famous routes.

PICK FOR DIVING

Sharm El Sheikh is known for its diving scenes, being so close to the Gulf of Aqaba. You can spot grey reef sharks in Egypt’s Red Sea and Turtle Bay is where you can see local turtles and stingrays. Over in Hurghada, there are also some cool wrecks to explore.

PICK FOR WATERPARKS

Turkey loves a waterpark – there are loads in popular resorts like Antalya, Marmaris and Kusadasi, as well as hotels that have their own. They’re super family friendly, with wave pools and lazy rivers to match the bigger rides, too.

PICK FOR HIKING

It’s tough to beat Switzerland’s lake and mountain scenes… July through to September is a great time to go for hiking, when you can make the most of the light nights and warm weather. And Zermatt, St Moritz and Interlaken are great places to aim for.

PICK FOR ZIP-LINING

Costa Rica’s jungle landscape was made for zip-lining. The longest line here is 1,590 metres long and you get stunning volcano views from the canopy zip line at Arenal Volcano.

PICK FOR ROCK CLIMBING

Krabi in Thailand is perfect for rock climbers. The Railay Peninsula is THE spot, so people travel all over the world to climb its limestone karsts. The main tourist season of November to March is the best time to go, when the weather is warm and dry.

ORGANISED FUN

These Activity holiday hotels LOVE a bit of organised fun – think tennis courts, a waterpark, kids’ clubs, games rooms, dance lessons, all just steps from your room. Being bored because there’s nothing to do isn’t a real excuse anymore.
IT’S CALLED BALANCE

Activity holidays aren’t a bootcamp, don’t stress... If you’re away for a week, we’ll let you off spending a few days by the pool or snoozing on the beach. It’s called balance.

Best destinations for Activity holidays

These places are loved by outdoorsy types, and you can browse some deals to go with them.

Set off on a guided hike on the Caminito del Rey in Andalusia along a safely constructed path, 330 metres high. You’ll pass mountains and bridges, as well as the Chorro reservoirs.

Pick from three different combinations of intro dives and snorkelling spots in the Red Sea, where there are over 1,000 species of fish and over 200 types of coral.

Fully embrace the surfer lifestyle with a yoga session on the beach, followed by a lesson in the waves just outside of Lisbon. You can pick to surf or bodyboard and the lesson lasts two hours.

Frequently Asked Questions About Active Holidays

Activity holidays are all about filling your days with activity and adventure. Swap your sunlounger for waterslides, surfing, diving, hiking or some golf. If it’s just the kids that need to let loose, take a look at our hotels that run kids’ clubs. They put on everything from sports sessions to DJ lessons. Don’t worry, you’re not signing up to a bootcamp or anything by looking for an Activity holiday. It’s all about finding somewhere that has all the gear for you to get active if you fancy. Maybe one day you decide to take it easy on a sunloungerthat’s okay, too.

Make sure your trip matches your fitness level and experience you still want to be able to enjoy yourself. The weather is another factor. Dry days and some sunshine usually make outdoor activities a lot nicer, so think about spring and the start of autumn when it’s still cool enough to be active. And, budget is always something to consider. You might be travelling solo or in a group and need to decide on something that suits everyone.

Yes, we deffo recommend getting travel insurance that specifically covers adventure activities, if you’re planning on doing them. Standard policies may not include sports like diving, skiing or rock climbing. So, make sure you check the policy details to ensure it covers medical emergencies, activity-related accidents and any necessary equipment.

Yes! Loads of Activity holidays cater to solo travellers. Going on small group tours or guided adventures is the perfect way to meet people and you can match that with solo-friendly accommodation options, where it’s easy to socialise and find events.
