Spend the afternoon people-watching at Grand Central
Grand Central is one of the city’s architectural showstoppers and a people-watchers’ paradise. There’s the vast central concourse – a chandeliered, cathedral-style space of sunlit windows, massive stone pillars and a glittering brass-and-glass clock cocooned under a magnificent arched, gold-starred ceiling. Then there’s the stunning sculpture of Mercury crowning the south entrance. And once you’ve gawped at the building, rest up at one of the fabulous Art Deco restaurants. Choose one with a view over the concourse, sip a steamy cappuccino or classic cocktail and while away a delicious hour watching the milling crowds below.Universal Studios Florida is a real, working film studio, where rides, shows, and movie sets transport you beyond the screen and behind the scenes. You’ll face villains you’ve only seen in films, and go on rides that allow you to feel like you’re saving the planet. You might even encounter a dragon that breathes real fire. Must-dos include The Wizarding World of Harry Potter™ – Diagon Alley™, where you can shop for wizarding supplies before navigating the underground vaults of Gringotts™ bank. Also, Illumination’s Minions have taken over an entire street – blast your way to supervillain stardom in Illumination’s Villain-Con Minion Blast. Plus, make sure you see The Bourne Stuntacular – a stunt show that follows Jason Bourne across three continents, using a cutting-edge combination of stagecraft and film.

Now, you can climb inside the towering figure – all the way up to her crown. It involves a 154-step spiral staircase to the top, but it’s worth it for the views. On the way back, you can hop off at Ellis Island to learn more about the immigrant experience. The museum here is crammed with personal documents, clothes and photographs of the homelands and loved ones they left behind.
Read MoreA trip to New York without seeing Times Square is like a visit to London without Big Ben. It’s much more than a square, this chaotic mix of mammoth billboards, flashing lights and naked cowboys is the throbbing hub of the city. The best time to visit is after dark, when everything gets turned up a few notches intensity-wise. Just before midnight – or at 11.57pm to be exact – the neon-lit ads give way to a coordinated digital art show.

Cross Country Creek
Take the load off your feet and cruise down the gently meandering Cross Country Creek.
The only way to spend a spare evening in New York is on Broadway. It’s arguably the most famous theatre district in the world, with tons of shows to choose from. You’ve probably heard of the big musicals like Wicked, Kinky Boots and Les Miserables, but there are also stage debuts from Hollywood stars and low-budget plays. Top tip – if you swing by the TKTS booth in Times Square, you can grab same-day tickets for a bargain price.
