Take a glass-bottom boat to Es Vedra Island

Es Vedra Island, off the south-west coast of Ibiza, is steeped in legend. Some say it was the birthplace of a Phoenician goddess, others that it was home to Homer’s sirens. Whatever the truth, this uninhabited rock gets lots of visitors sailing around it. They usually stop off at Cala d’Hort beach afterwards for a paella lunch, as they gaze across the water to this mystical place. Boat trips leave from San Antonio’s harbour.

  • When it comes to sunset time, that’s when many people like to settle themselves into a beachside bar with a jug of sangria, or perhaps a cocktail – and most certainly their camera. Floor cushions, shisha pipes and ambient music give the place a hippie vibe. Fire throwers and jugglers add to the entertainment factor, and after-dark the music switches between house, rave and hip hop.

The main square and the waterfront Passeig de ses Fontes are the main entertainment areas, with Ibizan dancers, local singers, jazz bands and a craft market. On the Saturday, there’s a rather spectacular fireworks display, which lights up the bay.

San Antonio Bay’s coves do a great job with their fine sand and crystal-clear water. They often come with jetties, too, where you can get a ferry across to other beaches. There’s Cala Bassa, where the shallow water is teeming with little fish, and a path through the pine forest takes you to rocks overlooking the island of Conejera. And, at Cala Conta, you get a trio of coves, including one for naturists.

Between them, San Antonios Bay and Town cover a lot of retail bases. Pareos – Spanish-style sarongs – make a good gift, as do candles, wind chimes and Lladro pottery. There's also an everything-under-one-roof Pacha shop for cherry-branded souvenirs.
