Dance at Potos' beachfront bars

Along Potos beachfront, young islanders start to gather for the clubs that nestle in among the cafés and restaurants. Electric-coloured cocktails are ordered at the beach terrace and the regular night crowds start to swell as DJs spin loud pop chart tunes. The waterfront packs in a few lounge bars, too, where the volume is a little lower and you’re more likely to be sipping sweet Thassian wine on a cosy roof terrace.

  • The Festival of Ancient Drama is one of the most important annual celebrations in Thassos. It takes place in Thassos Town at the ancient amphitheatre. Here, Greek tragedies and operas are performed as they were intended – in Greek and in the open-air. The shows are easy to follow, and there are great views across the town behind the stage too.

Potos Beach is rather popular, thanks to its watersports. Canoes, kayaks and jet-skis are all available from the waterside centre, or you can rent a boat for the day and head out in the Aegean Sea. There’s also a dive centre here with beginner courses – once you’ve got the hang of it, you can head to the rocky sea bed to get up close to the native blenny, a colourful little fish with bulging eyes.

At Piatsa Michalis, beach-front tables with huge cushioned seating overlook the sea – which makes it a very good spot to see the sun set. As for the food, you’ll get generous portions of traditional Greek dishes. Tzatziki and garlic bread are a good starter, perhaps to be followed by the grilled octopus with spring onion garnish. And if you’ve room, there’s hot doughnut and ice-cream for dessert.

Kazaviti is a mountaintop village about 40 minutes’ drive away. It’s the oldest village on the island, nestled under a canopy of trees and with views across to the Aegean Sea. You can wander the ancient streets, lined with rustic stone houses and rickety wooden balconies that have stood for centuries, then stop by for a drink at the friendly kafenion on the pretty little main square.

Tutti Frutti does a good trade as an all-day beach bar, but it’s a real pull for young party-goers in the evening, when local DJs take to the decks. Skilful waitresses weave their way around, serving cocktails. As the sound of house, R’n’B and Greek pop fill the air, everyone spills out from the upper terrace and downstairs bar area to dance on the sand.

Potos keeps great shopping hours – you can browse the places on the main street from 9am to 10pm, 7 days a week. Hunt around for crafts including delicate embroidery and glazed pottery, plus some local produce like organic jams and olive oil. Meanwhile in the capital, Thassos Town, the old town gets your attention with luxury jewellery shops and boutiques selling jackets, shoes, bags and wallets.

Many of the best cafés and authentic tavernas are found along the beachfront at Potos. Traditional Greek dishes dominate the menus, with classics like moussaka, baked lamb and giuvetsi – a kind of chicken pasta bake. Meanwhile, sardines, octopus and mackerel keep up the fish side. And some international favourites sneak in, too – among them the classic paella and a Bulgarian cucumber soup.
