Head out on a daytrip to Makarska
The lively city of Makarska is an hour’s trip down the coast from Podstrana. It’s home to Medieval churches, a Baroque palace and Croatia’s second-highest mountain, Biokovo. On a clear day, hike up its tallest peak and you can see as far as Italy. If you’ve got time, stop off in Omiš on your way back. Make tracks for the fortresses and cobbled alleyways, where pirates roamed from the 12th to 14th century.Over several weeks in summer, Podstrana comes alive with a celebration of all things musical, literary and dramatic. The event diary includes dance, art, poetry gatherings and themes like fishermen night.

You can check it out for yourself by taking a stroll along the coast to the ancient church. Alternatively, head uphill to 11th century St George’s – the oldest church in town. From here, you can take in sweeping views of the area.

The speciality is just-caught seafood, so expect dishes like crab risotto in champagne sauce and grilled squid. Dine by the beach or in a vine-covered courtyard, where the meat and fish is barbecued in front of you. Then, wash it all down with some Croatian wine.
