Terpsis, Pefki Lindos

Over the years, owner Vangelis has built up quite a reputation for this little place. And the dolmades made from his mother’s own recipe have a following of their own. Chef Michalis gives traditional Greek dishes a modern twist – like his beetroot and village sausage kleftiko and cinnamon-flavoured halva. Be sure to book ahead, especially if you want to eat in the garden.

  • The peace of Pefkos is why people love it here, so the resort doesn’t go wild at night. It really is about savouring a bottle of wine with dinner or chatting over cocktails. You can always take a 10-minute taxi ride to Lindos, though. It’s not boisterous – loud music is banned after midnight – but there are plenty of bars and a few soundproofed clubs for late-night dancing.

On a glass-bottomed boat trip to Lindos, you can sit back and watch the sun bounce across the glass-clear Aegean Sea. It’s also a great way to get your first view of the pretty, whitewashed village, clinging to the hillside. While you’re here, a walk – or donkey ride – up to the famous Acropolis is a must. Boats from Pefkos leave from the jetty at the end of Boat Trip Road.

Pefkos doesn’t go into a frenzy over shopping. The place has plenty of little supermarkets for essentials and picnic food, plus just enough shops on the main road to cover souvenirs. Leather goods, jewellery, handmade lace and ceramics are all worth a look. Or, if you’re after something drinkable, look out for koriantolino. Rhodes’s signature liqueur is made from ouzo, spices and a special flower that’s unique to the island.

Pefkos Beach really doesn’t hang about when it comes to watersports. As well as the usual pedalos, there’s both kite-surfing and windsurfing on offer. The calm conditions here are well-suited to beginners, so it’s a great opportunity to have a go. You’ll find plenty of places on the waterfront offering lessons and equipment hire.

Lindos has a history of attracting rock royalty – some of music’s biggest names are regular visitors and Pink Floyd’s Dave Gilmour still keeps a house here. It’s no coincidence, then, that the place gets packed out with tribute bands for its annual rock festival. Lindos Rock happens in June each year and brings a week of open-air, seafront concerts.

In keeping with its unspoilt, rustic vibe, Pefkos has many family-run restaurants that serve up Greek classics alongside pasta and pizza. Beef stifado, lamb kleftiko and moussaka are all great dishes to try. Fresh seafood is also a regular on the menu, especially octopus and bream. And do keep your eye out for places that serve Rhodes’ signature dish of squid risotto.
