Roam around the Olympiapark

For a change of pace from Munich’s Gothic architecture, the Olympiapark shines a light on more modern additions. An iconic stadium was built for the 1972 Olympic Games, designed to look as though a tented canopy was strung along the length of the structure. You can climb to the top these days for views across the park, and there’s loads of green space around it to explore.

    Head to the city’s main square, outside the Rathaus town hall, and you’ll see crowds gather at 11am and 12pm to catch a glimpse of its historic musical clock. As the bells start to chime, you’ll see copper figures re-enact stories from the 16th century. The building that surrounds the clock is one of the most beautiful in Munich, so it makes for great pictures, too.

    For something with a regal undertone, Munich’s stunning Schloss Nymphenburg Palace comes up trumps. This grand Baroque building, in the west of the city, was a summer residence for Bavarian royals for 300 years, and its pristine grounds are ideal for a scenic walk. The lawns and lakes were designed by the same man who oversaw the city’s famous English Garden.
