Sip Tinto De Verano by the waterfront

There are a handful of karaoke bars and pubs dotted around Los Gigantes' main street, but the marina's the place to be for cabaret and lounge bars that put on crooners and operatic cabaret. Most places wind down around midnight, but until then you can take a seat on the waterside terraces with a tinto de verano – it’s a red wine and lemonade mix that’s a Tenerife speciality.

  • The marina's the hub of Los Gigantes, and the seafood here's in good supply. Watch the boats come and go as you eat just-caught sea bass with patatas arrugadas – sweet and salted potatoes – or a bowl of puchero, a tasty saffron-infused stew. Post-dinner, many holidaymakers like to take a walk around the harbour to look at the fish swimming around.

    At Los Gigantes, there are lido complexes complete with bars and restaurants to fill the gap when the sea isn’t at its calmest. There’s a popular one just across from Los Guios Beach which comes with a seawater pool and ocean views. There’s another on Avendida Maritima, which has water slides. And at the Crab Island complex, a couple of minutes’ stroll from the beach, the seawater flows right into the pools.

    Mount Teide volcano looms large in Tenerife, and more than three million people each year visit this UNESCO World Heritage site. You can go on a bus tour or drive a hire car up the winding road, stopping off at viewing points along the way, before taking a cable car to the top – some 3,718 metres up. The terrain mimics the moon’s surface, and on a clear day the views are on another level.

    The Carnival De Los Gigantes is a huge, four-day bonanza of colourful parades and Canarian food markets. The highlight's a procession through town of brightly-colored floats – they’re loaded with costume-clad competitors vying to be Carnival Queen. Aside from the partying, there are food stalls selling Canarian delicacies and local wine.

    Around Los Gigantes there are lots of well-stocked mini-markets and tourist shops selling beachwear and gifts. For shoes and designer labels, there’s a commercial centre just up the hill from the marina. And if you want to browse for local handicrafts, there are markets throughout the week where you can get your hands on authentic keepsakes and souvenirs.
