Brave the climb to the Acropolis of Lindos

The centuries-old Acropolis sits on a rocky outcrop rising 116 metres above Lindos. It’s a bit of a steep climb to the top, but you’re rewarded with well-preserved remains of temples, churches and an impressive monumental staircase. Not to mention, the views – you can see for miles along the coastline. Further down the hill, you’ve also got an old amphitheatre, which used to hold around 1,800 ancient Greeks.

  • When it comes to dining, Lachania keeps things simple with a total of two tavernas – one is owned by the local priest. You’ll find the other, Lachania Platanos Taverna, in the main square. Everything about it is traditional Greece, from the vine-covered veranda outside to the stone fireplace inside. The menu is in the same vein – think rabbit stew, lamb shank and chicken souvlaki.

And once you’ve finished browsing, you can refuel with a drink in a rooftop bar.

The Mojito Beach Bar does day-to-night perfectly, switching bright sunshine and sunbeds, for mood lighting and laid-back tunes. You’ll find it right in the middle of the sands, so it’s got a secluded feel. Alternatively, you’re a half-an-hour taxi ride away from Lindos and its cosmopolitan bar scene.

You don’t stay in Lachania for beaches, but nearby Lindos has a double helping – half an hour’s drive away. First up, Pallas is a cove of golden sand, just below the whitewashed town. The action is mainly sunbathing-based here, with a few pedalos and kayaks for hire. Then, there’s St Paul’s – a sheltered heart-shaped bay, which is great for snorkelling. It’s only 20 feet deep, so spotting multi-coloured fish is easy.
