Eat traditional Greek food in the square

You’ll find traditional tavernas serving up hearty Greek favourites down by the seafront and in the main square. If you haven’t already done so, be sure to try stifado, a beef casserole that’s pure comfort food. Otherwise there’s kleftiko, a melt-in-the-mouth, slow-cooked lamb dish. And if you’re looking for something to eat on the go, try the gyros – they’re like kebabs, only better.

The whole walk is about 20 kilometres, and you’ll need to arrange transport back unless you fancy doing it all over again.

For more choice, you can always head 10 minutes up the coast to Kallithea, where you’ll find late-night pubs and bars on the main strip. And Hanioti, 10 minutes the other way, also has a reputation for lively nightlife – you’ll find a selection of bars around the main square.

It says something about the quality of the food at this taverna that people drive all the way from Thessaloniki to eat here. You’ll find it away from the main drag, in the old village square. Food-wise, it’s all about traditional Greek cooking. Aside from the usual dolmades and moussaka, you’ll also find house specialities like pork with prunes, or goat casserole.

Owners Tony and Debbie lay on a warm welcome at this popular bar in the middle of town. Drawing a mostly British crowd – Debbie’s from Wales – it’s the perfect pit stop for a cocktail or ice-cold Myrthos beer, though many swear by the English breakfasts. There’s Sky Sports for those who want to watch the big matches, or you can simply take a seat on the terrace and watch village life as it happens.
