Sample the island's cuisine in town

Kremasti isn’t lacking for restaurants and you’ll find most of them around the main square. The food is authentically Rhodian – in the seafood places you can try psarosoupa fish stew and the gemisti supia – that’s squid stuffed with feta cheese. At the little tavernas it’s a meatier fare – one speciality is the rifaki – a backbone of lamb roasted overnight in individual ceramic pots. Save room for the talagoutes though – pancakes drizzled with locally-produced honey.

  • The Panagia Festival is a bit of a 2-in-1 celebration – there’s a 10-day festival with traditional handicrafts and folk art on display in the main square, plus a funfair for children. Then on August 15th there’s the Panagia Festival itself, a big feast dedicated to the Virgin Mary, when thousands of pilgrims come to pray at the Panagia Kremasti church. Look out for barbecues on the square.

Kremasti’s beach is a wide swathe of sand and shingle topped with lots of sunloungers and umbrellas, plus a few restaurants too. It also happens to be a watersports hotspot. You can walk along the front and pop into one of the watersports centres – there’s surfing, jet-skiing and waterskiing on offer. Or, try your hand at windsurfing on the choppier waters further out at sea.

You can pick up all your essential bits in Kremasti’s supermarkets, but for more shopping variety head to Rhodes. There are a couple of spots to focus on here. There’s cobbled Sokratous Street – right in the heart of the old town, it’s lined with opulent jewellers and souvenir shops selling handmade pottery and embroidered linens. Or, for high-street fashion, head to the north of town – there you’ll find names like Esprit, M&S, Mango and Zara.

Nights in Kremasti are fairly quiet, with evenings usually spent in tavernas over a bottle of homemade retsina wine. If you’re after a bit more excitement head to Rhodes Town, 20 minutes’ drive away. Over there it’s a mix of elegant piano and jazz bars along the water, plus a few tucked-away bars in the old town. For the wildest techno and pop nightclubs on the island, head to the main Strip in Faliraki, another 20-minute drive.
