Hippocratea Festival, Kos Town
The whole of July is dedicated to this celebration of the arts, which is up there with Greece’s biggest festivals. It all happens in Kos Town, and you can catch concerts and plays, as well as art exhibitions and street performers. The venues themselves are worth a look, with many events taking place in the Medieval castle and Eleftherios Square.Kos is small enough that you can explore it by quad bike. This is a cheap way to get around, plus it allows you to get off the beaten track. The island is easy to navigate, too – the roads here are pretty quiet and signs are in English. One place worth visiting is Therma Beach, with its bubbling hot springs – it’s about an hour away.

Do be sure you leave room for pudding – the local honey cakes are especially good.

You’ll also find the full menu of watersports on the beach – you can rent a pedalo or try jet-skiing and paragliding. You might even want to take a boat from the marina to the nearby sandy beaches, Paradise and Magic.

And if you head out back you’ll find the piece de resistance – a swimming pool, complete with sunbeds and umbrellas. There’s an all-day restaurant that’s as good for breakfasts as it is burgers, while evenings see live music and dancing.

Meanwhile, the beachside location gives you some knockout views of the bay, and if you come during the day, you’ll get a free lounger, too.
Read MoreKefalos is a laidback village that doesn’t go in for all-night partying. At the bars along Kamari Beach though, you’ll find regular quiz nights and BBQs. But nights here are generally quite restaurant-geared, and a typical evening might involve splitting a bottle of local wine over a meal in a taverna.
