If you fancy picking up something more traditional, head for the massive market in Nea Moudania. It’s only a 10-minute drive from Kalives, and offers stacks of olive oil soaps and hand-embroidered linens at bargain basement prices.

    The humble olive is practically royalty in Kalives – and the neighbouring farming village of Olinthos produces the cream of the crop. If you only visit its olive festival for one day, make it the 31st July. A music concert finishes the celebration off with a bang, and you’ll have the chance to taste locally-made tsipouro brandy and freshly-picked olives. Olinthos is only a 10-minute drive from Kalives.

    Pine forest trails, gin-clear brooks, and wildflower meadows sweep through Sithonia, the middle peninsula of Halkidiki’s three-pronged coastline. At almost 900 metres tall, Mount Itamos is the best viewpoint – you can see right across to the myth-shrouded Mount Olympus. Walking paths web the whole of Sithonia, giving you the chance to hunt out hidden beaches and ruined fortresses.

Nightlife-wise, it’s got most angles covered, so you could end up sipping cocktails in a beachside taverna, rocking out to a DJ on a promenade bar, or catching a play at the waterfront theatre.
