Retail wise, you can browse the weekly market for bags and clothes in Giardini Naxos, or shop for souvenirs and shoes in nearby Recanati. If you’re looking for Prada, Gucci and Armani though, head for Corso Umberto 1 in Taormina. Along with the big-name designers, this famous street also does a good line in jewellery, antiques and pottery.

There’s not much left of the old city walls, but the views over the bay make great photography fodder.
