Explore the island by quad bike

You can hire quad bikes to explore the island. It’s a cheap way to get around – about 10 euros worth of petrol can last five days – and also allows you to get off the beaten track. Explore the little villages north of Ermones, where you’ll stumble upon monasteries dating back to the 11th century.

These friendly, family-run joints serve up crowd-pleasers like steak and pizza, together with more traditional Greek cooking. You can’t go wrong with the moussaka, for sure, but do try dishes like pastitsada, the famous Corfiot casserole made with cockerel.

    You won’t see any bars or clubs in Ermones, but that doesn’t mean you can’t find a drink – the local tavernas will sort you out with a glass of Corfiot wine or the local metaxa brandy. Some lay on regular Greek dancing nights, too. And for more choice, drive 10 minutes to Pelekas, where you’ll find a bigger spread of tavernas, along with late-night cafés and cocktail bars.

    It’s worth making the 45-minute drive to this popular event, held every first Saturday of September. Not only will you see the beautiful island interior en route, you’ll also get to try delicious Corfiot wine made the traditional way. It’s excellent value – buy a carafe for around three euros and you can fill it as many times as you like. Meanwhile, souvlaki grills on the BBQ, and live bands get everybody dancing.

    Ermones has a supermarket where you can pick up essentials, but if you really want to flex your credit card, you’ll need to go to Corfu Town. The narrow streets off the Liston are good places to pick up souvenirs, such as handmade embroidery and painted ceramics. The new town, meanwhile, is where you’ll find the well-known brands – there’s even an M&S.
