Escape the crowds on Flecha del Rompido

Flecha del Rompido’s the favourite fleck of sand around here. This double-sided stretch of land gives you two shorelines to pick from. The waters on the inland side are as calm as a lake, while the southern shore faces the open sea. It’s only reachable by ferry, which keeps the crowds at bay – even during the busier summer months.

  • El Rompido’s surrounded by water, including the Piedras River. Its banks are made up of salt marshes, sand dunes and woods – making them a twitcher’s dream. On a walk through the wild landscape, you can spot birds, like the white stork, the stilt and Montagu’s harrier. The wildlife’s not just in the air, either – chameleons disguise themselves in the greenery, while seabass and bream glide through the waters.

El Rompido doesn’t do big shopping centres, but it has got the Centro Comercial El Faro. Other than the restaurants and bars by the beach, it’s where you’ll find the biggest concentration of places to eat. Plus, there are a few shops selling crafts, clothes and souvenirs. They’re all housed in small hut-like buildings, with some looking out over the estuary.

And you can try them without leaving El Rompido. Seek them out on the menus of the tapas restaurants in town. Other imports from Huelva also include the famous choco – cuttlefish – and Condado white wine.
