Go yacht-spotting in Nelson’s Dockyard

This natural harbour looks like it’s been plucked from Pirates of the Caribbean. It was once the naval base of Admiral Nelson, who anchored his ships in the sheltered network of coves and beaches. These days, you’ll see high-end yachts bobbing between Nelson’s Dockyard and the English Harbour, with well-preserved colonial buildings dotted around the shoreline.

  • Antigua’s technically not a country by itself, and you can visit its pint-sized international partner – Barbuda – by boat or plane. Despite being the lesser-known of the pair, the beaches here are on a par with Antigua’s best sunbathing spots. While you’re here, you can visit the island’s only town, Codrington, and the huge Frigate Bird Sanctuary.

    Fungi might sound like a mushroom-based meal to newcomers, but it’s actually the island’s culinary calling card. It’s a bit similar to Italian polenta, but in true Antiguan style, this cornmeal starter’s stirred by a miniature cricket bat called a ‘fungi stick’. Once ready, it’s rolled into balls and served with saltfish and mashed vegetables.
