A feet-up kinda place

Trou d’eau Douce keeps its getaway recipe simple. Fly-and-floppers have a huge streak of east-coast sand to make the most of, while more active types can spy exotic fish on a snorkelling jaunt in the lagoon. You’ll be sharing the waters with criss-crossing fishing boats, and later, the catch of the day’s crisped up on barbecues beside the beach.

Green, white and blue

This place has three favourite colours, and it sticks to them like glue. The sandy shoreline’s a shock shade of white, and looks more like icing sugar at first glance. Palms and skinny filao trees add an extra dose of tropical, and the surrounding countryside could be mistaken for a big green carpet. The inviting, swimming-pool blue of the Indian Ocean completes the trio.

Sand traps

Boat trips tend to follow a similar pattern from here, with the neighbouring island of Ile aux Cerfs the most common finishing point. The beaches here are even more secluded than Mauritius’ main collection of sunbathing spots, and there’s a coral reef hidden away beneath the surface of the bay. If you’ve not got a towel slung over your shoulder, chances are you’ll be carrying clubs instead. The island’s beaches are only rivalled by its top-drawer golf course, which boasts 18 holes that are as easy on the eye as they are fun to play.
