Experience the magic of the Arctic on a city break to Tromso.
City breaks to Tromso
If you’re wondering what a day in Tromso can look like, here’s an idea… First off, take a ride on the Fjellheisen cable car, which takes you up the side of a mountain for the best views of the city and the surrounding fjords. Then, you can hike down, or just chill at the top in the café before hopping back on the cable car for the return journey. Next, it’s sauna time and Pust is where it’s at. Imagine this: a wooden sauna floating on the harbour, with a view of the iconic Arctic Cathedral. And, because it’s on the water, you can jump in for a quick dip in the big blue – if you’re feeling brave. If you like the look of the Arctic Cathedral, you can pop over to take a closer look. It’s just over the bridge in downtown – the view from the bridge alone is well worth a visit. And while you’re there, you may as well take a wander downtown – cute wooden buildings, cafes, and souvenir shops galore. And of course, it goes without saying, there are plenty of wintery activities to get stuck in to, from dog sledding and whale watching to visiting a reindeer camp.Best time to go to Tromso
The weather can be unpredictable in Tromso, so when to visit really depends on what you’re going there for. If you want to see the Northern Lights, your best bet is to visit between September and March, but one thing to bear in mind is the Polar Night – the period of winter where the sun doesn’t rise at all. In Tromso, Polar Night lasts from the 27th of November to the 15th of January. If you’re imagining a scenic snowy landscape, you should hold off your trip until the months of January, February and March when there’s a higher chance of snow. And for hiking or to see the Midnight Sun, you should visit Tromso in the summer.
