Holidays to Skiathos are all swanky bars in the capital, dreamy beaches and scenery straight from the movies.

Once is never enough

Nicknamed the boomerang island because visitors just keep coming back for more, it's easy to see why people fall in love with Skiathos. Between mainland Greece and Turkey, this little North Aegean island boasts some of the best beaches around, separated from each other by untouched countryside and a sprinkling of quaint villages.

Flashy capital

You might find yourself bumping into A-listers in the island's glitzy capital, Skiathos Town. Streets here are lined with designer boutiques, luxe nightclubs and fancy restaurants, while the harbour's packed with gleaming six-figure yachts and Champagne-cork-popping bars. There's also an old town where you can spend an afternoon soaking up some of the island's rich history.

Clifftop castle

In the northern corner of the island, Skiathos Castle overlooks the scene from a huge cliff. If you can make it to the top, you'll be rewarded with impressive views down to the beach and across the Aegean Sea towards mainland Greece. It takes about three hours to get up there on foot.

Along Papadiamantis Street in Skiathos Town, you can pick up unofficial footie shirts and colourful souvenirs. For mementos a level up from touristy magnets and mugs, head to the narrow lanes trailing away from the main street. Independent shops make and sell handmade treasures like ceramics and embroidered linens, and you can grab jars of golden local honey.

Head to the Monastery of Panagia Evangelistria – a 10-minute drive from Skiathos Town – for a more unique shopping experience. The 19th-century convent's fascinating, but it's the gift shop that you'll want to see – it sells premium wine that won't break the bank.

If you fancy splashing some serious cash, hit the designer boutiques and fashion labels of Papadiamantis Street in Skiathos Town. The artisan craft shops have one-off ceramics and abstract sculptures made of painted driftwood. If you're short on luggage space, stop by the independent shops selling hand-crafted jewellery.

Skiathos Town comes to life after the sun sets with a Dancing Queen spirit that doesn't let up until dawn. Party animals boogie until the early hours in joints on the buzzing disco strip by the coast. Moody jazz clubs and chic cocktail lounges dot the seafront, and they fill with an effortlessly cool crowd as night draws in.

In Skiathos Town, the ancient quarter's labyrinth of whitewashed alleys is studded with tavernas cooking up local specialities like juicy pan-fried prawns. After dinner, find the town's outdoor cinema and watch an old classic under the stars. Alternatively, head to a bar along Achladies Bay and take in the views of Skopelos on the horizon.

Satisfy your sweet tooth with some amygdalota – macaroon-like almond cookies made with orange blossom water. They're in practically every Greek bakery, and they often come gift-wrapped with a bow.

When in Skiathos, follow in the locals' footsteps and pass on the ouzo for something a little stronger – tsipouro. Less aniseedy and more like Italy's grappa, this little tipple's been around for many a moon.
