With activities designed to keep you on your feet, holidays to Schladming are a chance to explore the lush Enns Valley and its surrounding peaks.

Gingerbread town

Arranged around a traditional main square, this 700-year old Tyrolean town in central Austria's packed with bars, restaurants, cafés and shops. There's also a leisure centre here with fun activities for the kids, and in the evening you can jive to the tunes of brass bands.

The green heart of Austria

Snuggled by mountains around a valley, Schladming's steep slopes are popular with winter skiers and summer riders alike. Cycle your way down the hillside trails, stroll through the town's streets or visit the well-stocked Planai Welten Museum to properly get a feel for the place.

Exciting Enns

Watersports are all the rage here, so tackle the fast-flowing Enns River by white-water raft or brave its cool depths with a swim. If you prefer a gentler pace on holiday, there's plenty of lakes nearby where you can sunbathe and take in the mountain views. Just a 15-minute drive from Schladming, Ramsau Beach would be a great place to start, with lots of walking and cycling trails too.

Top things to see and do in Schladming

Schladming has a couple of beach and bathing lakes in the vicinity. Ramsau Beach is the closest, attracting families and those with lots of energy to spare. Lake Pichl is peaceful in comparison and slightly more out of reach, but still a wonderful place to spend the day.

Ramsau Beach is a large bathing lake and amusement area just 15 minutes’ drive outside of Schladming. The shingle shores are flanked by sprawling lawns, beautiful mountain scenery and plenty of adventure. Have fun with beach volleyball, trampolines or football.

Lake Pichl is a little bit further away by car, but it’s also quieter. One of the cleanest lakes in the region, Lake Pichl has a children’s adventure playground, table tennis, a spacious sunbathing area and a snack bar.

If you don’t mind a bit of an out-of-town trek, drop by the regional farmers' market on the first Saturday of every month. It’s held from early May through to early October at Naturpark Sölktäler. Browse products like smoked meats, sausages, breads and honey.

Schladming has a casual clothing and activewear brand, Blue Tomato, and a few specialist sports retailers to choose from. Klieber Josef is great for shoes and handbags, if you’re looking for something non-sporty in town.

Livelier evenings in Schladming can be spent at Cabalou, directly opposite the Hotel Post. They serve delicious cocktails and a variety of coffee options.

If you just want to relax, pop by Café Niederl to pick up an ice-cream to accompany you on an evening stroll around town.

With all the walking you’ll be doing, you’ll need some hearty meals to keep your energy up. Schladming has around 40 restaurants – an excellent number for a pretty small town. There are plenty of traditional places where you can sample the local specialities, but you can also find high-end eateries for a more sophisticated experience.

For 400 years, the Talbachschenke restaurant has been feeding visitors from all walks of life. The rustic interior makes it the perfect choice for a romantic meal. Cosy up as you cook your own meat on a hot stone, accompanied by homemade sauces, baked potatoes and fresh bread.

If you’d like a more modern meal, visit Die Tischlerei. Stylish surroundings compliment the menu, which takes simple produce and turns it into a culinary work of art.

Right in the centre of town, the Stadthotel Brunner houses a popular restaurant. The contemporary décor matches the interesting menu, which combines hearty traditional fare with international favourites and even unique Ayurvedic dishes.
