With sailing, diving and forest hikes on its doorstep, Playa de Santiago holidays can be as adventurous as you fancy.

Quiet fishing port

On the southern coast of lush La Gomera – the second-smallest of the Canary Islands – Playa de Santiago's an old fishing harbour with a sleepy village centre. Its laidback seafront's a haven of seafood tapas spots and café-bars overlooking the Atlantic Ocean – all next to a tranquil pebbled beach.

Beach days

Playa de Santiago's stony beach is sheltered, with calm waters too blue to resist. Join the diving school and dip under the waves to see the sea life, or get your adrenaline rush aboard a catamaran. For something a little different, you can get to the black sands of volcanic Valle Gran Rey Beach in just 15 minutes by boat.

Regal views

Believed to have once been the home of a powerful king, La Gomera's known as the Valley of the Great King. With its lush terrain, majestic mountains and limitless sea views, this island's a photographer's paradise. For a view fit for royalty, hike to the highest point – Alto de Garajonay – in the Garajonay National Park.
