Holidays to Olbia are a Mediterranean mix of sun-drenched beaches, authentic Italian food and glamorous resorts.

Coast, cliffs and caves

From the seashore to the hills, the landscape around the Italian city of Olbia on the north-west coast of Sardinia is magical. With a historical city centre, plenty of shopping opportunities and white-sand beaches to top it all off, there's plenty to see and do here.

Historical big-hitter

Wander through Olbia's café-lined piazza and head over to the San Simplicio Temple Necropolis to learn about the history of the city, from the Roman age all the way through to the Middle Ages. There's plenty of architecture to admire, too – why not stop by the Chiesa Di San Polo Apostolo and snap a photo of the multi-coloured dome that sits atop the church.

Dreamy daytrips

Corsica's just a hop away by ferry, and the ride takes only an hour. Lush valleys, pristine beaches and thick forests blanket this Mediterranean island. Meanwhile, sweet villages and thriving cities deserve a pit stop, too.

Picture perfect

If you're up for the drive, visit the towns of Bosa and Alghero. Both are just under a two-hour drive from Olbia but are worth the trip. It's no wonder so many great artists came from Italy with towns like Bosa to paint – high up above the town is a castle surrounded by colourful buildings, while Alghero is filled with shops, museums, restaurants and cafés.

These sandy shores are known for emerald waters, and Olbia's got easy access to some of Sardinia's most sought-after beaches. Whether you find yourself at white-sand Porto Istana or popular Spiaggia Pittulongu, you're in for a treat.

Hailed as one of Sardinia's best beaches, Liscia Ruja's a sweeping beauty. It's not nicknamed 'Long Beach' for nothing – this sandy arc's the longest on the coast. Nestled in dense woodlands, it's an escape from urban life but still has mod cons. Plus, it's just a 30-minute drive from Olbia.

It doesn't get cuter than a pink beach, especially when you've got emerald waters for contrast. Ferries can – well, ferry – you to the Maddalena Archipelago, where Spiaggia Rossa's shores have a rosy tint.

It's not all about cash-splashing in Sardinia. If Porto Cervo's high-end boutiques aren't your thing, head for the local street markets and sellers. The seaside town of Cannigione wakes up every Monday to a bustling market, where you can sample local goodies like caglio cheese and citrus fruits.

For a mix of shopping options, whether you're looking for fashion or furniture, you'll find it here at Olbia's best road for shopping – Corso Umberto – alongside trinket-selling street stalls. There are plenty of cafés to relax in when you've had your fill of retail therapy.

If you've the budget for luxe fashion, get yourself to Porto Cervo pronto. This Hollywood favourite's full of designer shops and swish boutiques. You'll find exclusive names like Gucci and Prada chilling out near the marina.

Sardinia knows how to party, and most of its shindigs happen outdoors. Evenings start at creative cocktail bars, then spill out onto the beach as bumping clubs set up on the sand. Once the light fades, DJs pump up the music and laser shows light up the sky.

There's much more to Porto Cervo than shopping. If brushing shoulders with VIPs is your deal, spend an evening in the town's little oceanfront square. Sip cocktails in sleek bars and watch the sunset in full glamour mode. Even if you don't spot any celebs, you'll totally feel like one yourself.

Thin and crispy, carasau's a favourite local bread – simple and seriously addictive. Sardinian supermarkets sell sheets of it, so you can stock up before you head home.

You won't get far in Sardinia without spotting Pecorino Sardo or Fiore Sardo -- a hard cheese made from full-fat sheep's milk. It takes about six months to age and is delicious with veggies and pasta – luckily there's plenty of places when you can pick some up.

Sardinians go wild for roasted suckling pig. Salted and seasoned with local herbs, it's usually eaten straight off the skewer. Although it's time-consuming to prepare, you'll find it in restaurants all over the island.

Move over tiramisu, it's all about honey-sweetened desserts in Sardinia. Seadas – honey and ricotta cheese-filled pastries – are particularly tempting. Lemon zest gives them an Italian zing, and a coating of honey sweetens them up.

No trip to Sardinia is complete without trying a lobster dish. Aragosta arrosto is the speciality in this region. It's a dish of baked lobster that's sliced, then smothered in breadcrumbs and seasoning for an authentic taste of the region.
