Saddle up for a solid dose of tranquillity – holidays to Niederau are straight-up peaceful, with dreamy mountain trails and oddles of snap-worthy moments.

Village valley retreats

An Austrian mountain village close to the border with Germany, Niederau dishes up serious serenity – think sweeping farmland and snow-capped mountains. Just a 20-minute walk away, the Bach Mountain Farming Museum provides a taste of local culture. And you can take chairlifts – or the free Markbachjoch gondola – up to the peaks.

Ice-topped peaks

On Markbachjoch Mountain, you'll find awe-inspiring artwork in the Sculpture Park surrounding a glistening lake. Have a look around, then sit by the waters or tuck in to a spot of strudel in a cute café.

Travel by tractor

It's a walker's paradise of nature-filled hiking trails here – hop on the hiking buses or join a guided hike for free with your Wildschönau Summer Card (included with your stay at selected accommodations). And that's not all Niederau has to offer. The Bummelbahn train – pulled by a tractor – can carry you across the valleys. It'll get you great mountain views as you trundle past traditional farms and fields. This plucky little ride even runs in the snow – and the place is at its prettiest when it's coated in white.

Niederau is quite a quiet town, but there are a few lovely places to enjoy a few drinks – the Hexenhäusl is particularly good for cocktails. Occasionally, there’s a festival on or some live music to enjoy, so keep an eye on what’s on that week.

Niederau is nestled in the countryside, so there’s beautiful scenery to take in while wandering the scenic town during an after-dinner walk.

In Niederau, local specialities are a must-have. This is because all of the recipes – passed down through generations – use fresh and exciting ingredients and are made with passion. Even the liqueurs and brandies are distilled with high-quality berries from the local farms. You’ll be able to try traditional dishes at the small family-run restaurants that dominate the town, and inside the hotel restaurants.

Located in the Kristall Plaza apartment complex is Glennie's Bar. It serves up international cuisine, with Dutch dishes like grandma's meatballs and Dutch fish and croquettes alongside Austrian favourites and the McGlennie burger.

At the bottom of the mountain is the simple and traditional Restaurant Tennladen. With outdoor seating, huge portions and reasonable prices, it’s a great place to pop into for a tasty and hearty lunch.

Just off the main road is the Hexenhäusl, a modern bar and restaurant serving a combination of American and Austrian dishes. The service is prompt, the bill will be surprisingly small and on certain nights they hold live music events.
