Sunny beaches, red carpet glamour and hillside hikes – it has to be holidays to Los Angeles.

LA baby

Tinseltown, La La Land, City of Angels and The Big Orange – Los Angeles has earned itself a few famous nicknames as an absolute icon of an American city. Hollywood – AKA the entertainment capital of the USA – shines bright in the West Coast city of LA. It’s the place people come to find their fame and fortune. Don't miss the chance to walk in the footsteps of legends at the Chinese Theatre, where celebrity hand and footprints immortalize Hollywood's famous faces, and take a stroll along the Hollywood Walk of Fame, where over 2,600 stars twinkle under your feet – all for free. If you time it just right, you might even run into an A-lister during an induction ceremony. For the ultimate film fans, head over to the Dolby Theatre on Hollywood Boulevard, where the glitz and glam of The Oscars® come to life. While scoring a ticket to the Academy Awards might be a stretch, you can still live out your Hollywood fantasy with a guided tour and even sneak a peek backstage.

Hollywood Hills

Los Angeles isn't just about the glitz and glamour. It’s the perfect place to get outside and immerse yourself in the natural beauty of the city. Take a stroll through the star-studded Runyon Canyon, a popular place for celebs to walk their dogs. Or venture into Griffith Park, a wonderland with an observatory, golf course and tennis courts. Rise with the sun to beat the heat or chase the sunset for that perfect pic. And even if hiking isn't your thing, scaling up to the Hollywood sign is an absolute must.

Tours and more

The best way to uncover the real LA is to take a tour. There’s something for everyone, from hop-on, hop-off tours to exploring cultural museums, and if you really want a taste of the celebrity lifestyle, why not splash out on a helicopter tour of this famous city? For a more active vibe, try a cycling tour. Pedal down Route 66, stop and admire the celeb homes in Beverly Hills and Bel Air, and cruise along Santa Monica and Venice beaches. For foodies, grab a bite at one of the famous taco trucks in East LA, or switch things up with a fancy meal in Beverly Hills.

Top things to see and do in Los Angeles

With all-year round sunshine and over 75 miles of coastline, Los Angeles offers some of the best beaches in Southern California. From large, sloping sands to lounge on, to chilled-out coves, there’s plenty of spots to soak up some Californian sunshine. You can take your pick from the wild and exciting sands of Venice Beach, with its ‘circus style’ boardwalk, roller blade along Santa Monica pier or find a more relaxed vibe at El Matador beach, with its rocky backdrop and scenic sunsets. For more family-friendly fun, head over to Huntington Beach. Nestled between Los Angeles and San Diego, you can hit the ocean for a surf lesson, go bird watching at the Bolsa Chica Ecological Reserve, or try your hand at paddleboarding and beach volleyball.

If you love to be in the heart of the action, dive right into Venice Beach. Sunbathing, surfing and street performers – Venice Beach has it all. Even with its mile long coastline, Venice Beach isn't just about soaking up the sun and catching waves. You’ve got to check out the pier, it's where all the city's creative characters come to play. You'll see mimes, jugglers, and musicians filling up the boardwalk, adding that extra bit of eccentric charm. And, if you’re feeling adventurous, jump into a game of basketball with the locals or catch some waves at Venice Breakwater. Not forgetting the world-famous Muscle Beach Gym – where bodybuilder and actor Arnold Schwarzenegger used to pump iron back in the day. Just a heads up, Venice Beach gets packed out, especially in the summer, so be sure to get up early and snag yourself a prime spot on the sand.

If you’re looking for a peaceful escape, Carbon Beach, known as Billionaires Beach, is your go-to spot – think calm waters and cosy sands. Jump in the car and drive just 30-minutes to Malibu, where you’ll find this exclusive gem tucked behind ultra-wealthy homes. Once a private beach, it’s now a favourite hangout for the rich and famous and is about as secluded as Malibu gets – the perfect place for a sunbathe or surf away from the hectic vibe of LA.

If you’re shopping on a budget, then head over to West Hollywood and check out one of the thrift shops selling second-hand clothes at rock-bottom prices or browse the vintage stores – you might even bag a designer brand at a bargain price. A must-visit for any bargain hunter is Jet Rag. Found in La Brea, it hosts a dollar sale every Sunday, so pop by and see what treasures you can find.

Whether it’s the latest tech at Apple, sportswear from Lululemon and Nike or makeup from Charlotte Tilbury, The Grove Shopping Mall has got you covered. Find this large, outdoor shopping centre just a 30-minute drive from downtown LA in Melrose. And there’s no shortage of restaurants to pick from here too, so you can take a break and grab a bite to eat.

You can’t visit LA without hitting up Rodeo Drive in Beverly Hills. It’s the ultimate spot for a luxury shopping trip, with high-end designer stores and fancy boutiques. Picture lavish window displays, and palm tree-dotted streets. Splash the cash on over a hundred designer brands, including Versace, Jimmy Choo and Dior. Plus, you'll get a glimpse of the posh neighbourhoods and maybe even spot a celebrity or two cruising around.

If you’re after a wild night out, head over to West Hollywood to Sunset Strip. Here you’ll find colourful neon lights illuminating the street and a banging club scene. This fast-paced, vibrant stretch of Sunset Boulevard is close to swanky rooftop bars – try The London West Hollywood for a luxury feel with its own rooftop pool deck or for a more relaxed vibe head to The Sundeck offering craft cocktails and panoramic views across the city. You’ll also find rock clubs and outdoor concerts on this lively strip. Famous spots like Whisky a Go Go, The Roxy Theatre, and the Viper Room are hotspots for live rock ‘n’ roll music – legends such as The Who, Bruce Springsteen and David Bowie have all hit the stage here.

For a laidback vibe, head to Santa Monica Pier, which has the perfect mix of entertainment and relaxation. Here you can take a stroll along the beach, catch golden hour to witness the stunning sunset or grab a seat to watch live music and street performers.

This meaty French roll is one of Los Angeles most iconic sandwiches and has been around for over 100 years. It might not be fancy, but it’ll have you coming back time and time again. Imagine a freshly baked, crusty roll stuffed full of sliced roast meat, often beef, and dipped in a thick, rich sauce made from the roast drippings. To finish off, add a sprinkling of cheese, let it melt and there you have one of the most popular bites in the city.

LA’s street food scene reflects the city’s diversity. From Mexico to Guatemala and from Thailand to Korea and Japan – there’s something for all tastes. You can munch on Mexican tacos bursting with traditional flavours – think juicy, well-seasoned meats and seafood paired with spicy beans, salsa and fresh guacamole all inside a crunchy shell. Or give the Korean taco a try, a grilled corn tortilla filled with Korean barbecue, red salsa, lime and onion.

Another sandwich, but this one is a sweet and chilly treat to keep you cool. It’s simple and nostalgic – go traditional and have your favourite ice-cream flavour sandwiched between a chewy cookie or get creative and swap the cookie for churros or macarons. Whether you like vanilla or strawberry, or you enjoy experimenting with more unusual flavours, you will find a shop offering these sweet treats on every street corner.
