Start off in Vilnius Old Town and soak up the history and culture of this charming capital. This UNESCO World Heritage site will wow you with its quirky architecture – picture a mix of Gothic, Baroque and Renaissance. History buffs, you’ve got to go to the Palace of the Grand Dukes of Lithuania. Once a grand palace, it’s now a museum that takes you on a journey through Lithuania’s rich history. Just a 30-minute taxi ride from the centre will get you to Trakai Castle – a stunning medieval fortress nestled on an island in Lake Galvė. Imagine Gothic red-brick walls, towers and a central courtyard that becomes an open-air stage for concerts and plays in the summer.
Natural beauty
You might think this country is all city breaks, pretty buildings and historical landmarks. But, there’s so much more. We’re talking over 3000 lakes, as well as five national parks and 32 gorg beaches just waiting to be explored… say less. Whether you’re into hiking, boats or birds, this place has got it all. Galve Island is perfect for a boat trip and soaking up the stunning scenes. If hiking trails are your thing, then Lake Drūkšiai in Dzūkija National Park has got your name all over it and for birdwatching head to Lake Žuvintas. Don’t miss the famous Curonian Spit where huge sand dunes meet the Baltic Sea. Here, you’ll find long sandy sweeps and cute little fishing villages to wander around.
Culture fix
Fancy adding a bit of culture to your trip? The country’s buzzing festival scene is where it’s at. Music, crafts, poetry and foodie fests are all on offer in this small Baltic country. From jazz to rock and classic to pop, the music scene has something for everyone. Pažaislis Music Festival in Kaunas goes on for three months from May to August and has some of the world’s top musicians performing classical and opera music. If you’re after something a bit different, then Galapagai Rock Music Festival in July might be your vibe. Set on the picturesque island of Zarasai Lake, it features a mix of international and local rock, electronic and hip-hop artists. And that’s not all – foodies, if you’re here in the summer the capital’s got a street food festival just for you. We’re talking everything from international faves like fancy burgers and pizzas to traditional Lithuanian soups and stews, you’ll also have cooking demos and live music.
Best time to go to Lithuania
Short summers and icy winters are on the menu at this Baltic beauty. Swerve the summer crowds and visit in late spring or early autumn when the weather’s still mild but you can stroll through gorg Vilnius Old Town and explore the country’s stunning castles at your own pace. If it’s beachy days you’re after or you fancy a hike in one of the beaut national parks then it’s got to be June-August. Summer temps sit in the early-to-mid twenties, making it a popular time to visit. Don’t forget winter though, the weather might be freezing but this just means you experience a picturesque scene of snow-covered landscapes and magical Christmas markets that feel straight out of a rom-com.
