A new resort on the block

As resorts go, Hisaronu is a bit of a newcomer. About 30 years ago it was just another sleepy village, but when neighbouring Olu Deniz needed more tourist accommodation, Hisaronu stepped up to the plate. Since then, this spot just inland on Turkey’s south-west coast has become a major player in its own right. It’s got up-all-hours nightlife and one of the Med’s most photographed beaches on its doorstep.

The Blue Lagoon

Hisaronu might not have its own beach, but it makes up for it with 2 at Olu Deniz, a 10-minute bus ride away. The main one is a shingled strip backed by cafés, bars and restaurants. It’s a prime spot for watching paragliders come in to land on the prom. And then you’ve got the famous Blue Lagoon – a secluded place with sand that curves round crystal-clear water.

Lively nightlife

Hisaronu is something of a dark horse. By day, it looks all innocent, but once the sun goes down the party gets going. Drag acts, karaoke, foam parties – you’ll get them all here. Finding the fun is easy – just follow the neon lights and thumping music to the main street.

Close to Fethiye

Fifteen minutes by bus and you’re in the town of Fethiye. The old quarter is a treasure trove of shops selling leather, gold, jewellery – and lots and lots of Turkish carpets. When you’re hungry, stop by the fish market – you can pick what you fancy and get one of the restaurants to cook it up. And you should stick around to see the famous cliff tombs at sunset – well worth the steep climb.
