A slight step inland from Portugal's striking southern coast, the sweet village of Guia's the real deal. Traditional tavernas dot the streets and cosy restaurants serve spicy piri-piri delights. Liven things up with daytrips to nearby towns. Albufeira, with its quaint old quarter and playful nightlife, is a big crowd-pleaser and just a 20-minute drive away. A little further away at a 30-minute drive is Vilamoura, where you can divide your time between the beach and the historical Roman ruins.

Although Guia's surrounded by lush vineyards, there's still easy access to the coast. Praia Gale, a Blue Flag award-winning beach, is just a 10-minute drive away. Hit the waves on a surfboard if you're feeling brave, or chill out on a sunlounger and crack open a good book instead.
