Late to the party

Gournes used to be a US army base, so has been off the tourist trail for some time. That's done it the world of good, because it's now a seaside chill-out zone. Sitting on the north coast of Crete's Heraklion region, life here moves slow and steady, from village streets to sandy beach.

Sight-sea-ing

Like many Greek coastal villages, life revolves around the sea at Gournes. Fishermen cast off in the distance, restaurants serve up freshly caught fare and kayakers have plenty to discover. You'll even find the sea inland – Greece's largest aquarium sits in the centre of town.

Heraklion hub

If it’s possible to feel too relaxed, there’s a solution nearby. A 15-minute drive away, Hersonissos entertains thrill-seekers and fun-lovers with a variety show of treats. By day, it’s all about watersports and waterparks, while bustling bars and clubs come to life at night.
