Holidays to Ericeria offer surfing in an authentic Portuguese fishing town and dramatic cliff-top views.

Surf spot

Ericeria’s a once-quaint fishing town that’s been transformed into a surfer’s must-visit destination. In fact, it’s Europe’s only World Surfing Reserve, and has surfing spots suitable for everyone, from beginners to champion surfers. Being the surf capital of Portugal hasn’t taken away from the fishing towns’ charm, though. The centre of the village is a maze of pastry stores, ice-cream parlours and restaurants serving freshly caught seafood and Portuguese delicacies such as salted cod and famous custard tarts. If you want to see the fishing harbour in all its glory, take a stroll along the Largo das Ribas and soak up the clifftop views.

Paddleboard up the Lizandro River

If you want a break from the waves, take a trip a few kilometres up the coast to Foz do Lizandro Beach, where the mouth of the Lizandro River meets the sea. Grab a paddleboard, stand up and drift your way upstream, taking in the jungle-like scenery as you bob along. And if you’ve never given it a try before, don’t fret – this calm river is great for beginners, and is more relaxing than thrill-a-minute.

Top things to see and do in Ericeira

Being named the surfing capital of Portugal, Ericeria should have first-rate beaches for avid suffers to hit the waves. This fishing town has just that, with waterfronts for all surfing abilities, plus a handful to relax, such as the town’s central beach, Pescadores. It’s a sunbather’s favourite, thanks to its sheer cliffs that shield it from the wind. If you want to learn to surf, your best bet is Foz do Lizandro Beach, where you’ll find plenty of surf school shacks. Or, if you want more of a challenge, Ribeira d’llhas has some of the biggest waves and puts the pros to the test in professional contests.

As it’s a small town, most of the main shops are within walking distance. The Mercado Municipal is located in the main square of Ericeria, and has three floors full of flowers, fruit, vegetables, meat and fish. They even sell sea urchins – Ericeria loosely translates as ‘land of the sea urchin’, so if you’re going to try them anywhere, here’s the place.

For a relaxed evening, head to the town centre and dip into one of the ice-cream parlours or pastry shops and pick up a local favourite, pastel de nata – what we Brits might know as a custard tart. If you’re not ready for the night to end, you’ll be able to find a few laid-back bars where you can carry things on.

Caldeirada’s a fragrant stew that never tastes the same twice, because it can have different ingredients each time it’s made. The selection of seafood used varies depending on what the local fishing boats have been able to catch that day. The dish has a rich base of onions, white wine, olive oil and tomatoes, with a blend of fresh herbs and spices to bring out the flavours from the fish. The stew’s usually complemented with thin slices of toasted bread to mop up the fish-infused sauce.
