Scenic lakefront views, the authentic Villa Olmo and the colourful markets are just a few highlights of Como city breaks.

City breaks to Como

The picturesque city of Como is situated on the Italian-Swiss border, overlooking the southwest end of Lake Como, with rolling green hills in the background. In the centre of the city, you can appreciate the architecture, exhibiting a mixture of Romanesque and gothic styles. Piazza Duomo is Como’s main square with a Baroque-style cathedral smack-bang in the middle. One of Como’s best attractions – which also happens to be free – is the Villa Olmo, with its Italian-style gardens overlooking the lake and rooms full of ornate paintings and statues. To see Como from above, jump on the Como-Brunate funicular from Piazza Alcide de Gasperi and arrive in Brunate in just a few minutes. If you go back to the lakefront, you can take advantage of the boat service and visit all the local towns perched upon the lake.

Best time to go to Como

Como can get very busy, with high season being late May to late September. If you want to beat the crowds and soak-up the sun, April and October are the best months to go with temperatures in the late teens to mid-twenties. If you do go in high season, in July and August the thermometer stays around the late twenties, but August can be quite rainy.

Top things to see and do in Como

Lake Como’s shores are studded with beaches, so you’re spoilt for choice. Just a ten-minute drive away from Como, you have Lido Villa Olmo, a beach club with two swimming pools, a bar and views of Lake Como. Another beach club, around a 30-minute drive away is Lido di Argegno. This is right by a little harbour and has a grassy beach and pool. Most beach clubs around the area turn into bars and nightclubs if you want to let your hair down when the sun sets.

Como is all about the colourful markets. Some worth a mention are Mercado Mercerie which takes place Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday mornings all along the city’s medieval walls. Here you’ll find fresh fruit and veg, cheeses of all types, flowers and lots more. Another market worth a mention, is the antique market, which takes place every first Saturday of the month in San Fedele square. Every other Saturday, a craft market is held here, where you can buy homemade goodies, such as handmade soaps and clothes.

Como is known for being elegant and chic, but the lakefront ambience gives off a lovely buzz once the sun goes down. Piazza Volta and Pizza Mazzini are the best places to go with restaurants, wine bars and pubs lining the streets. Unlike England, you don’t have to move on from the restaurant to progress the night. Many stay and savour the evening way after last orders.

This bread-like sweet treat can be enjoyed at breakfast or you can indulge and accompany it with a scoop of vanilla ice cream and a glass of red. To create this dessert, the bread is soaked in milk with a citrusy lemon zest, topped with apple and pear slices and sweet sultanas, then sprinkled with rosemary.
