Pretty palaces, sandy beaches, and galleries are all on the agenda on holidays to Cascais.

City breaks to Cascais

You’ll find the town of Cascais just west of Portugal’s capital, Lisbon. As well as being a nearby neighbour to the big-name city, Cascais is probably best known for its throng of beaches – 17 in fact. Plus, it sits on the edge of the Sintra-Cascais Natural Park, which is well worth a daytrip. This massive area’s home to mountains, palaces and castles.

Visit the citadel on a royal retreat

For a throwback to the days when Cascais was the go-to holiday destination of the Portuguese royal family, head to the Citadel. This impressive area’s home to a palace and a 16th-century fortress. Plus, art lovers should be sure to visit the galleries that are dotted around the surrounding district.

Top things to see and do in Cascais

If you’re wanting to hit the beach, Cascais has around 17 to pick from. Praia de Ribeira is one of the most central in Cascais, with shops and restaurants all within a 10-minute walk. If you’re after a more secluded spot, then head just east to Praia de Rainha. This beach features dramatic rock formations, golden sands and calm waters.

Towards the waterfront you’ll find a host of bars where you can enjoy a sundowner with a sea view, as well as a couple of nightclubs for something a bit livelier.

This is a traditional delicacy which you’ll spot on most restaurant menus throughout Cascais. It’s boiled-and-baked octopus that’s drizzled with olive oil and sprinkled with herbs, and served with a simple-but-tasty portion of potatoes.
