Carovigno's known for its high-quality olive oil. It's a smallish town in southern Italy perfect for just wandering around, or using as a base for daytrips around Puglia. Spend a day at the Dentice di Frasso castle or the Chiesa Madre church, then skip to nearby Torre Guaceto marine protected area – a national park with a beach.

Jump back in time

The Dentice di Frasso Medieval Norman castle's something else – towers, gates, those little nooks for shooting arrows – you get the picture. You'll need about two hours to explore the whole place and the grounds, so take the afternoon and go photo crazy.

Food, glorious food

When you've worked up an appetite exploring the castle, the town's got you covered. Great little bars and eateries serve up red wine and antipasti – try the figs stuffed with almonds. The town calendar's chock-a-block with religious festivals, so visit when one's in full swing to partake in the feasts.
