If there are two things a city break to Cannes can guarantee, it’s a lot of glitz and a whole load of glamour.

Hollywood vibes

Cannes sits on the French Riviera, and it’s known as Beverly Hills’ sister city – that’s probably something to do with its Hollywood-style credentials. Book a visit in May, and you can time your trip to coincide with the Cannes Film Festival – one of the biggest events in the film industry’s calendar. Expect a buzzing atmosphere, plus plenty of opportunities to do some celebrity spotting. Whenever you book a stay, though, you’ll find that Cannes is full to the brim with swanky restaurants, chic bars and luxury shopping.

Take a trip to Ile Sainte Marguerite

Fancy stepping back in time? A visit to Isle Sainte Marguerite is just the ticket. This island sits just off the coast of Cannes, and it has a chequered past. Back in the 17th century, it housed the mysterious prisoner, the ‘Man in the Iron Mask’. Today, that same building is a marine museum, the Royal Musee de la Mer, displaying artifacts recovered from nearby Roman Moorish shipwrecks.

Best time to go to Cannes

Temperatures between March and May sit comfortably around the 10°C to 20°C mark. Committed sun-seekers tend to favour trips between June and August, when the thermometer reaches 30°C. The period between September and February, when it’s cooler and there’s a higher chance of showers, is the least crowded.

Top things to see and do in Cannes

There are plenty of sandy beaches to pick from in Cannes. You can opt for a private beach, where you can expect lockers, sunloungers and even waiter service. These beaches are within a 10-minute walk of the famous shopping area Boulevard De La Croisette, but they come at a cost. If you don’t want to splash out, there are public beaches, too. They’re more minimalist in terms of facilities, with showers and restaurants nearby.

Boulevard De La Croisette is in the heart of Cannes. Shaded by palm trees, it runs between the beach and the coastal road, and it’s overflowing with luxury designer stores. It takes roughly half an hour to walk the length of it – if you don’t get tempted by the likes of Dior, Prada and Gucci on the way.

The club scene is buzzing down by the beaches, but if you’re after a laidback evening, take a stroll uphill to Le Suquet. This bustling hillside village boasts cobbled streets, quaint alleyways and beautiful architecture, and you can spend an evening in one of the restaurants or bars sipping local wines or cocktails.

Thanks to its location on the coast, the fish in Cannes is always excellent. Try bouillabaisse – a mix of onion, tomato, garlic, saffron, white wine and various seasonings. Traditionally at least four different types of seafood are added. It’s usually served with fresh crusty bread to mop up the broth.
