Queen of the Coves

Cala Galdana sits at the south of the Menorca island off Spain's east coast against a backdrop of pine trees and limestone cliffs. Both the shore and strip of hotels, shops and restaurants fit around its half-moon-shaped cove, which has a solid reputation as one of the prettiest on the island.

Luminous, soft white sand and a sparkling blue-green sea have earned Cala Galdana's beach its Blue Flag status. Stretch out on your towel or a sunlounger to catch some rays, or if you fancy a bit of shade, pine trees and picnic tables offer just that. Island living means fresh-from-the-net seafood. Fresh calamari, prawns and sea bass are popular choices – even better when devoured on the beachfront. Restaurants here serve up classics like grilled octopus, washed down with a glass of chardonnay from nearby Majorca.

Cala Galdana's well-loved as a family spot – the sea's calm and shallow, and restaurants often have playgrounds and waterslides as well as tasty food. In the evenings you can catch a captivating horse show at a riding school, while many hotels offer kids' discos.
