Bulgaria’s Bourgas region is in the country’s south-east corner. The big-hitter in these parts is Sunny Beach, a resort that stretches over eight kilometres of sand. A mythicaI castle and mud lake make up a day’s exploring and if you’re looking to party, this is the place to be – the beach is backed by countless bars and clubs.
Varna Region
Further up the Black Sea coast is the Varna region. The Danube Plain’s hilly landscape sets the scene in these parts, plus forests, thermal springs and a desert. Golden Sands takes the top spot here when it comes to where to base yourself. The resort’s got one of Bulgaria’s best beaches and it’s lined with bars and restaurants.
Historical sights
It’s not just about beaches and bars in Bulgaria, though. It’s got a whole load of history to show off, too. Varna’s sites are in great shape, from its 18th-century royal summer palace to the Byzantine baths in Nessebar. Check out the Aladzha monastery or trace a path all the way back to the 4th century with a visit to the Ovech fortress.
