Surf’s up in Biarritz! It’s said to be the place where surfing first arrived in Europe, so it goes without saying, this beachside town is a haven for those who can’t get enough of the waves. Sandy shores and warm summer temperatures make Biarritz beaches a great hub for chilling out with a glass of Basque cider or a plate of French tapas – known as pintxos – in hand. Head inland, and you’ll find bars and restaurants that open until late, plus shopping streets filled with designer names – the rich and famous have been holidaying here since the 1850s, after all.
Climb the Biarritz Lighthouse
Feeling energetic? Grab a ticket for just a few euros and climb the 248 steps of the Phare de Biarritz, right by La Grande Plage. It’ll be worth it when you get to the top, as the 360-degree views of the beach and city are pretty special. It looks just as photo-worthy from the ground, too – especially at night when the lighthouse glows.

Summers in Biarritz are toasty without being sweltering – temps usually hit the high twenties. The sea air gives a light, cool breeze, too, which means you can soak up the sun without working too much of a sweat. Even in winter, temperatures stay around a comfortable 10°C.
