Experience two types of cities for the price of one on a city break to Bergamo.

City breaks to Bergamo

This place is a two-for-one city break, made up of Citta Alta (upper city) and Citta Bassa (lower city), both connected by the funicular and contrasting in their offerings. Citta Alta is full of cobbled streets and winding alleys, with its beating heart at the centre – Piazza Vecchia. This former Roman Forum now a buzzing square to congregate with friends at one of the restaurants and cafés. Citta Bassa is the more modern of the two, where you can visit attractions like Museo Bernareggi (a gallery of sacred art and objects) and Santa Lucia Church.

Best time to go to Bergamo

Bergamo benefits from warm weather for most of the year – the months between April and October are the warmest on average, reaching the thirties in the height of summer and have the least amount of rain. Although, these months attract the crowds so if you’d rather avoid the rush, plan your trip in March when the temperature is still comfortable – averaging mid-teens – but the city is less crowded.

Top things to see and do in Bergamo

There are no beaches in Bergamo or the surrounding area but drive about 40 minutes out of the city to Cavallina Velly where you’ll find Lake Endine. This is an ideal spot to take a dip in the relaxed waters, escaping the hustle and bustle of the city.

Fashion enthusiasts should be sure to pencil in a visit to Oriocenter Shopping Mall, found adjacent to Bergamo airport. Here, you’ll be able to rummage through the rails of high street names like Zara, Stradivarius and H&M.

Bergamo may look ancient but looks can be deceiving. In fact, this city has a thriving nightlife scene, with lots of clubs and bars. Pick a starting point in Citta Alta and see where the night takes you.

Polenta taragna

This traditional dish is a must-try when deciding what to eat in Bergamo. It’s made from yellow cornmeal and buckwheat flour, giving it a stodgy texture. It’s enriched with butter and cheese, giving it a creamier taste and is usually served as a side dish.
