Bangkok city breaks are a feast for your senses, with extravagant architecture, open-air markets, rooftop bars and lines of street food kiosks.

City breaks to Bangkok

Bangkok is a city like no other, with a constant buzz and a treat for all your senses. Your tastebuds will be tantalised with spices and fragrant street food, from Thai-style fried noodles to deep-fried desserts, sold from kiosks lining the streets. As for what you’ll see in Bangkok, the views are unmatched with extravagant architecture, gold spires and rainbow mosaics. It’s not a quiet city either, wherever you go you’ll hear the hustle and bustle of traffic, backed by Buddhist chanting, upbeat music and sellers at market stalls. Admire the jade statue of Budda at the Grand Palace, head down the road to Wat Pho, to see the largest reclined Buddha in the city – be sure to check out its pearl encrusted feet – or see Bangkok from above at the Golden Mount for 360-degree views of the vibrant city. If that’s not enough, there’s also colourful streets, such as Khao San Road with nightclubs and exotic theatrical shows when the sun goes down.

Best time to go to Bangkok

Bangkok has a tropical monsoon climate, feeling hot and humid throughout the year. December and January are the coolest and driest months, with little to no rainfall and temperatures in the low twenties, creeping into the thirties. The best time to visit Bangkok is between November and February, when you can enjoy warm temperatures in the mid-twenties to thirties, ideal for sightseeing. If you want to see a Bangkok festival, then go in April for the Thai New Year or November for Loy Krathong – the festival of lights.

Top things to see and do in Bangkok

You can’t visit Bangkok without taking a look at their impressive markets – there’s even floating markets along the river. Asia’s biggest open-air marketplace is Chatuchak Weekend Market, also known as, JJ Market. On Saturdays and Sundays, the area is packed with rows of canopy covered shops and stalls – the place is so big, you’re given a map to help you get around. The stalls are split into sections and sell just about everything and anything from clothing and home décor to gardening supplies and antiques.

Bangkok is known for its nightlife so if you want a late night – or early morning – this is the place to be. It’s best known for its swanky rooftop bars and SuperClubs, that trump most others. Khao San Road and Thonglor are a great place for bar hopping, followed by Sukhumvit for the big-name nightclubs. Or, for something a bit different you could go to see one of Bangkok’s infamous exotic theatrical shows.

It’s likely you’ve had Pad Thai before, or at least a version of it, but where better to try it than Bangkok? You’ll find this rice noodle dish served at pretty much any of the street food kiosks. It’s a flavourful stir-fry with a base of noodles, topped with tofu, dried shrimp, crunchy bean sprouts and eggs. For meat versions, the noodles can be topped with crispy pork or tender chicken. The combination of ingredients leaves a concoction of sweet, sour and salty flavours in your mouth all at once.
