On holidays to Agkisaras, chilled-out beach days are at the top of the menu, with a hefty helping of historical sights on the side.
Tucked-away town
Although Agkisaras is nestled on Crete’s popular north coast, it’s a bit of an oasis. This peaceful town’s crowning glory is its sandy beach, which is barefoot-friendly and backed by a handful of hotels. Plus, the sunset views from here are top notch. That’s not to say that’s all this place has to offer, though. You’re close to plenty of attractions, too, including the fish-filled CretAquarium and the family-friendly Watercity waterpark.
Stellar sights
Staying in Agkisaras puts you within reach of some of Crete’s best natural assets. It takes an hour to drive to the Laisithi Plateau – this dinner plate-like spot of land is as flat as a pancake, and it’s ringed by towering mountains. It’s also famously dotted with bright-white windmills. You’ll find the legend-laden Psychro Cave here, too. Greek mythology has it that this was the birthplace of the main man – Zeus.
Daytrips to Heraklion
A 30-minute drive away, you’ll find Heraklion. This city lines up a crop of historical heavyweights, and its biggest hitter is the Palace of Knossos. Some say that this place is Europe’s oldest city, dating back to 6000 BC, so a visit should be on the top of your to-do list if you’re a history buff. It’s got some real stories to tell. The palace was full of winding corridors and secret passageways – it’s said to have been the home of the legendary minotaur.Best time to go to Agkisaras
