Crystal-clear seas

From its clifftop perch in the Halkidiki region of northern Greece, Afitos keeps its gem of a beach nicely hidden. The track down to the azure shore's steep, but well worth the effort. The stretch of sand provides plenty of room to stroll or sunbathe on sunloungers, and the water's clear and blue.

Cobbled streets and stone houses give a real old-school feel to Afitos village. The residents are warm and welcoming, and the tavernas full of tasty fare worth smashing a plate over.

A daytripper's dream

From the Byzantine tower and wildlife reserve in Nea Fokea, to turtle-spotting opportunities at Polichrono, there's no shortage of activities in the surrounding areas. Even better, most trips to the local sights take less than half an hour – easily enough time to get back before sunset.

In the village square is Agios Dimitrios, a magnificent old church built in 1859. Wander around the folklore museum, stop for a bite of Greek cuisine and settle into the laidback beat of this charming village.
