Last-minute holidays to Crete dole out miles of beaches, Venetian harbour cities and wild, Greek countryside.
Go west to Chania and Rethymnon
Whitewashed houses, spider web streets, olive-green shutters, stone passageways — Chania and Rethymnon both score highly in the postcard-pretty old town stakes. Venetian lighthouses and castles decorate the cities, too. As a bonus, they’re also home to some of the longest, sandiest beaches in Crete.
Head east to Heraklion and Lassithi
When it comes to nights out, Malia in Heraklion is a pretty big deal. The decks here have hosted names like Judge Jules, N-Dubz and Lisa Maffia. Its main strip is chock-a-block with clubs, bars and pubs that hold their own against Ibiza and Ayia Napa. Lassithi, meanwhile, is the master of beach-and-town combos. Agios Nikolaos and Elounda are top picks for laid-back beach days with tavernas in easy reach.
