Holidays to La Gomera take you to a pint-sized Canary Island for staggering hikes, laidback days and starlit beach parties.

Capital sights

Located in the Atlantic Ocean, the Spanish Canary Islands are actually closer to the coast of Morocco than to Spain. La Gomera might be second smallest, but its capital – San Sebastian – is a hotspot of pastel buildings, market-stuffed streets and Insta-worthy views. Restaurants dish out Canarian goodies in the main square, while culture vultures can get their fill at the city's archaeological museum.

Royal vistas

Valle Gran Rey means 'Great King Valley’ and this spot on the western coast of La Gomera sure lives up to that title. Grand valleys come with double-take views, while the coast's dotted with upscale hotels and cosy villas. Go boating in the bay for the chance to see pilot whales and dolphins.

Farm fresh

An old-world agricultural town, Hermigua's for those who like some urban mod cons with their chilled-out surroundings. Wander around Bosque del Cedro forest, or pick a restaurant to sample the local patatas arrugadas – translated comically to wrinkly potatoes – and cheese with mojo sauce.

Storybook valley

With valleys flanked by craggy mountains, the fairytale feeling is at its strongest in La Laguna Grande National Park in the centre of the island. Follow one of the walking trails to head deep between the peaks. Or, drive half an hour north and you'll reach the volcanic pebbles of Hermosa Beach, further away from the crowds.

With sailing, diving and forest hikes on its doorstep, Playa de Santiago holidays can be as adventurous as you fancy.

Spend holidays to San Sebastian exploring its world-class dining scene, lounging on black sands and papping Art Nouveau buildings.

Holidays to Valle Gran Rey showcase beaches washed by the royal-blue Atlantic against a cliff-lined valley.

Top things to see and do in La Gomera

For a small contender, La Gomera punches above its weight when it comes to beaches. From hidden-away coves like Playa de Medio to tourist favourites Playa de San Sebastian and Playa de Santiago, the island's coast covers everything from tranquil reclining to active exploring.

Those seeking a little bustle with their beach can head over to Playa del Ingles on the island's west side. Get to the soft sands early and watch banana boats scoot through the water. There are plenty of shops and eateries nearby for when you need a little refreshment, too.

Tucked in a small bay to the east, La Caleta's black volcanic stone beach is suited to under-the-radar recharging. Bring your beach shoes and a packed lunch to have at the picnic area next to the Atlantic.

San Sebastian's market is the place to pick up palm honey, pepper pate and queso Gomero – a Canarian goat cheese. If you're on the south side of the island, Playa de Santiago's your stop for authentic local souvenirs and handmade goods that are easy on the wallet.

To step your shopping game up a little, grab some natural cosmetics and souvenirs in Hermigua. Or, head west to the Mercadillo de Valle Gran Rey for Indian-dyed fabrics and handcrafted jewellery. You’ll find malls and shopping centres aplenty in San Sebastian for picking up regular bits and bobs, too.

La Gomera's more about high peaks than high fashion, but those looking to splash some cash don't have to go home empty-handed. Pick up something one-of-a-kind at a local gallery at Hermigua. In the capital, central Calle Fuenterrabía is a busy but charming street with top designer boutiques.

For some Spanish party vibes, check out the musicians and fire dancers who are regulars at the beach in Valle Gran Rey. Or, track down a bar with a live band – they pop up everywhere you turn after the sun goes down.

Most of the island's low-key bars can be found around the cobbles of Plaza Americana in San Sebastian. Lots of the tapas spots in Hermigua transform into local bars by night, too, with festivities spilling out onto the terraces.

These wrinkly potatoes are root-veg royalty – they're direct descendants of the original potatoes brought to the island hundreds of years ago. The assembly of this dish is simple – sliced potatoes are boiled in salted water until tender and ready to eat.

This Canarian favourite's actually a twist on a South American dish. Papas arrugadas, roasted maize and salted fish get mixed up into plates of savoury goodness.

The intense result of distilling palm honey and figs, this spirit's a perfect companion to boozy desserts – or sip it solo as a dainty digestif.

A syrupy sweet after-dinner drink popularised by Spanish troops in the 15th century, Carajillo's got a base of rum and coffee. It packs a deceptive punch – so don't swig and stand up too fast.

Usually made from roasted barley or corn, this local bread can be eaten for breakfast, as a sweet treat or even in energy-bar form. No wonder everyone on the island is so ready for hikes.
