The Algarve gets a green flag from us for its long line-up of Blue Flag beaches

The Algarve’s coastline is covered in beaches – we’re talking textbook-turquoise water, super soft sand and hidden coves. It stretches across the whole of Portugal’s southern shore, which means there are plenty of seaside destinations to pick from. There’s a bit of everything here – under-the-radar towns serve up a more traditional vibe with ancient sites, and then you’ve got the big and bold family resorts with waterparks, go-kart tracks and top-rated golf courses. And if it’s nightlife you’re after, the Algarve’s got you covered too. Whether you’re after a romantic beach break, a dose of culture or an epic family holiday, this sunny spot’s got a perfect stay for your trip.

Where to stay in The Algarve

Natural beauty and lively cities – the Algarve can do both. Alte gets a big tick for cool nature stuff, whereas Albufeira and Lagos are the go-to spots for mixing beach days and sightseeing with nights out. And for more of an authentically Portuguese flavour, Faro – the Algarve’s capital – has a medieval old town, a lovely marina and cute al fresco cafés.

For a more laidback feel, pretty Tavira or family-friendly Praia da Luz move at a slower pace. After an adventure? The Monchique mountains are an unreal backdrop for outdoor activities, with rustic hideaways and eco-friendly retreats on offer. If you like the finer things in life, Vilamoura’s boujie marina and golf courses bring the luxury, with five-star hotels and resorts where you can expect VIP treatment.

FAQs

It all depends on what you’re after. There’ll be a beach near anywhere you pick here, so you can narrow it down by what else you’d like to do on your trip. If the answer to that is ‘as little as possible’, Branqueira’s a stress-free zone, where sunny days on the sand become leisurely evenings eating fresh seafood. For stuff to do in the evenings, Armacao de Pera’s got a few cocktail bars that stay open ‘til late, or you can party the night away in Albufeira’s clubs.

When you travel to the Algarve, there’s an additional tax on overnight stays. The amount will depend on the type of accommodation you book, ranging from €1 to €2 per night for up to seven nights in a row. The amount generally increases with the number of rooms you’re renting and the time of year you visit. Peak season prices are always higher and so the tax increases then too.
