Pack your clubs, we’re going on tour

For some people, spontaneously practising your golf swing in the middle of the room is a new ick unlocked. Not for you. God forbid a girl has a hobby. What’s not to love about sunny days on the green, hitting balls on some of the world’s most stunning courses? Well, we get it – we’ve got a whole page for you that’s full of the best places to putt away.

Whether you’re a golf boyfriend and girlfriend, the next PGA pro, or just a supporting partner/friend that finally accepts them for who they are and has given into a group trip, scroll down for the good stuff…

Popular golf holiday destinations

These places get your love of golf down to a tee…

Sun all year round means prime golfing conditions and the perfect excuse to get in some practice over UK winter. The whole archipelago has over 20 courses to pick from, so you can always switch it up, but Gran Canaria and Tenerife have the biggest reps.

One of the world’s most famous golfing regions and arguably Europe’s leading golf destination… why wouldn’t you pick the Algarve? Fuel up on pasteis de nata and round up the 18th hole with a Sagres for sunset. The best seasons to play here are April to June and September to October.

Belek’s where you’ll find the majority of Turkey’s courses, with amazing 18-hole numbers, like the PGA Sultan and The Pasha, and it hosts a few European events, too. The rolling hills, the lush forests – the backdrop is just stunning to play against in spring and autumn.

The Costa del Sol and Costa de Luz, in particular, are top golfing picks in Spain. The whole country has over 400 courses and a round of 18 can cost as little as €60. Over 70 alone belong just to the Costa del Sol, giving it the nickname, the Costa del Golf – say less.

Dubai is a winter sun winner for a golf trip. There are multiple championship-level courses out there at the Emirates Golf Club and Jumeirah Golf Estates, and night golf is famous. Playing under the floodlights is super popular and means you can escape the midday heat.

Morocco’s getting more and more popular with golfers, offering desert, coastal and mountain settings. The warm climate all year round is also ideal, and the courses and caddie fees are great value. Marrakech is probably your go-to, but Agadir has a few spots, too.

If you’re going long haul, Mauritius has some of the best golfing scenes in the world. Ernie Els and Bernhard Langer are championship courses, and you can even play out on the island of Ile aux Cerfs. You’ve got volcanic landscapes, blue lagoons and lush fairways to look forward to.

Top tips for a perfect golf holiday

There are loads of factors that go into picking a good golfing destination, so take a look before you book.

If you’re a seasoned golfer, it’s not even a question – your babies are coming with you. You’ve probably invested in a better-quality set than you could rent, you play well with them and might even be a bit superstitious about changing it up. But, depending on the length of your trip and how much you’re planning to play, there are some cost benefits to renting when you’re there. If you take your clubs, you’ll need a travel bag to put them in so they can go in the hold on the plane, and you have to pay for them as checked luggage – some airlines might charge an additional fee, too. So, it’s worth doing some calculations to see if it’s worth it.

When you’re picking your course, check out each place’s policy so you know what to expect on the day. It’ll include things like the dress code, handicap requirements, pace of play, health and safety advice and golf cart rules.

You’ve got all your classic holiday essentials – suncream, travel adaptors, local currency, passport etc – plus all your golf bits. You don’t want to forget your clubs, balls, tees, gloves and super stylish golf fits, ofc – polo shirts are a given.

You should always get travel insurance for your trip but in this case, you’ll want to make sure your policy includes enough cover if you’re taking your own clubs. A standard policy should cover you to play golf, accidental loss, theft or damage to equipment – just check the excess required and that the total value covered is enough.

Especially when you’re going on a group trip, the budget is what keeps everyone happy. Pick somewhere that’s a decent price and put it to the GC so they can’t refuse. Try going for an underdog spot – certain destinations that aren’t as well-known for their golfing scenes will cost less all-in than just a hotel within walking distance from the famous St Andrews Old Course. Think about splitting a taxi to the local course to save money, too, rather than staying somewhere with one on site. Plus, if you’re going to be teeing off early and out all day, you probably don’t need to splash out on All Inclusive and just Bed and Breakfast or Half Board will do.

You’ve got your links, your parklands, your heathlands, your deserts and your sandbelts. Only real ones know there’s not just one kind of golf course, so if you’re being really picky, you could find somewhere that’s got a bit of variety. Mauritius, France and the Algarve in Portugal are known for their mix.

Spoiler alert, golf in the rain isn’t fun. And when – sorry, if – you get stuck in that bunker, it’s more mud than sand so good luck making it out. You want to find somewhere that’s in the dry season sweet spot, where the sun’s out, the days are dry but maybe it’s not too hot, as you’re out and exposed all day. Think spring and autumn for your classic European destinations, then – when it comes to winter – you can look at long-haul options. Or, if the price of an off-season trip makes it worth the risk, you can always add our Weather Guarantee.

Maybe, just maybe… you won’t be playing golf ALL the time? It’s good to look into what else a destination has to offer, too, like nightlife, foodie options, the history and culture. If you’ve been a bit off your game and need to reset, you can’t go wrong with a beach day. And, if you can’t beat your mate’s score, you might have a better chance at beating them at surfing if you all signed up for some lessons.

Everyone’s ideal tee time is a bit different. Early mornings are ideal for cooler temperatures and mean you can explore in the afternoons and keep your evenings free. But late afternoon and early evening starts also make the most of the cooler parts of the day. Plus, they often come with discounted rates. Either way, you’ll want to lock in your fave before the whole week books up.

Naturally, you’ll want to get your accommodation sorted first, along with your flights. Where you stay sets the vibe for the whole trip. You could splash out on a boujie pick that comes with its own golf course – or at least access to one nearby. Go Self Catering if you’re gonna be out and about most of the time, or Bed and Breakfast or Half Board are a nice easy win to set you up for the day. If hotels aren’t your thing, you can even look into local villas to have your own space.

Flights are an obvious one, but you can also add transfers to your hotel for extra ease – especially if you’re travelling with a big group and don’t want to faff over splitting taxis. You’ll have your bags and maybe even your clubs if you’re taking your own, so at least you can guarantee the right boot space. Then, in terms of getting to and from the course, your hotel can help you book local taxis or suggest some public transport options.

Try to get the best deal for your group – for loads of companies, the bigger the group, the better the deal. It pays to travel in numbers, so research different clubs to see where could sort you a good price.
