Refusing refund despite the booking is cancellable

I'm booking the hotel for my next visit to madrid
Since the trip is on march I carefully chose cancellable option up to 1 day prior to arrival, in the policy it's clearly stated that I will only be charge during my stay and not prior to that
To my surprise the hotel deduct my credit card and when I cancelled the reservation they mentioned that the reservation is non cancellable

The best thing about this property is the unique location.
rooms are not spacious.
rooms are really clean and very well equipped.
check in process was smooth and also check out as well.
food is really nice.
Upon check in we had a complementary drinks at the roof top and it was so crowded that we could not walk in but the view was fantastic....

Location, location, location. Nice people. Beautiful renovation of possibly an existing hotel, or not. Clean, comfortable and overall, an excellent place to stay. We will definitely look for their other properties when traveling in Spain again. ...

This is a 5⭐ hotel. Just very, very nice but without being showy.
The beds are super comfy, the breakfast is great and the food and ambience in the cafe are really good too. I can't comment on the main restaurant as we didn't use it. But, as it seemed to be full most nights, I assume it is good.
