A royal retreat

This coastal town has been known by not one, but three different names over the years – Vasiliko, Michurin and Tsarevo, which means ‘royal place’. Since the town was dubbed Tsarevo in 1934, the town has worked hard to retain its regal title. It was at the top of the Bulgarian royal family’s holiday wish-list for many years. And the quiet streets, peaceful beaches and neighbouring old towns are still teeming with charm today.

Sights in Sozopol

Tsarevo is all about kicking back and relaxing. But daytrip-friendly Sozopol is just a 35-minute drive up the coast. The old town is a maze of narrow, cobbled streets and wonky wooden houses. History buffs can check out the Medieval churches dotted through town, while animal lovers should hop on a boat to the wildlife sanctuary on St John’s Island.

Scenic hikes

Drive 30 minutes north of Tsarevo, lace up your walking boots, and you’ll be set to explore the Ropotamo Nature Reserve. Take your pick from several walking and hiking trails that cut across both marshland and sand dunes. If you’re more of a cruiser, you can jump on a boat that’ll take you along the river. Don’t forget your binoculars – over 200 species of bird call the reserve home.

Go fish

Rivers and streams run rings around this coastal town. They’re brimming with fish, so it’s an ideal place to cast a line – whether you’re a beginner or a pro. Hire equipment at one of the fishing centres and try your luck bringing in the catch of the day.
